The students and staff of Emerald State School are justifiably proud of its long history of educating the children of Emerald. Emerald State School was established on November 3, 1879 on the same site as the present school. The School is proud of its history, being the first school in the Emerald township. Over the years attendances have fluctuated with the town’s progress. In early days, most of

the pupils were the children of railway workers. Emerald remained largely a railway town until the late 1960’s and early 1970’s when the Fairbairn Dam was built and cotton farms were established. Further growth in the late 1970’s occurred when the Gregory Mine opened and 19 classes were crowded into the school! The situation was relieved when Emerald North State School opened in 1980. When more mines brought hundreds of families to town in the mid 1990’s, the school again reached 550 pupils and the opening of Denison State School in 1997 helped by halving the numbers. Today we have a student body of 300 students from prep to year 6 with a range of cultural and social backgrounds. Our school community is committed to creating a rich, challenging learning environment for our students. From prep right through to year 6, our students strive to succeed every day. Our staff brings a wealth of experience and expertise to their work. We foster excellence in teaching through team planning, ongoing staff professional development, across-campus moderation and a love of students and our work.

If you’d like your child to pick out a little something for Dad or a special person in their life, just send some small change along with them on their stall day.

Congratulations to 3W, our winners of the barrel draw! For their whole school reward, they have chosen “Dress as a Staff Member Day” on Thursday 3rd September.

There’s absolutely no pressure to dress up or buy anything! Keep it simple, a lanyard like your favourite teacher, a scrunchie on your wrist, a top knot, coloured hair, a shirt tied around your waist, an apron, sports shirt, cute dress, ankle socks, glasses or even a cardboard name badge.

Think about those little things that make our staff recognisable!

One of our Year 5/6 groups needs your help!

As part of their Future Anything Social Enterprise Challenge, they’re creating a community recipe book to raise money for cancer research and would love to include some of your favourite family recipes.

Have a recipe that’s been passed down through generations, reminds you of someone special, or is simply a family favourite? We’d love you to share it!

Please email your recipe as a Word document to [email protected]

You’re welcome to include photos of the finished dish or people connected to the recipe. Please be aware that submitted photos may be published in the recipe book, which will be available for purchase within our community.

Recipes are due ASAP, with a final deadline of Friday 4 September.

Unfortunately, no recipes can be accepted after this date.
