Regular skill development in martial arts relies on coaches trying to change behaviour by telling people (instructing) what to do.
Ecological Dynamics takes a different route: change the environment, and behaviour changes itself.
That is CLA in practice at CMAG.

Last night’s session showed how changing the environment changes behaviour. Different size spaces, rotating partners, and scaled tasks created immediate visible changes in movement, timing, decision making, and intensity.
Under Ecological Dynamics, skill is not memorising perfect techniques in static drills. Skill emerges through adapting to changing environments, opponents, and constraints.

The Worst Way To Learn Striking 26/05/2026

Padwork!!!
Are you wasting your time🤔
One of the biggest myths in martial arts is that endless padwork creates fighting skill. Pads can help develop fitness, power and basic coordination, but they are predictable, compliant and scripted. Real combat is none of those things.
People do not stand still and feed perfect combinations in a real confrontation. Distance changes, timing changes, pressure changes, emotions change. The environment itself changes behaviour.
At CMAG we use Ecological Dynamics and the Constraints Led Approach because skill is not memorising movements, it is learning to perceive problems and adapt in real time. Partner sparring games, constrained environments, decision making under pressure and live interaction develop timing, awareness, adaptability and composure far more effectively than endless rehearsed patterns on pads.
Pads have a place as a tool, but they should support learning, not replace it. The real development happens when another human being is trying to solve the same problem you are.

Should boys Wrestle🤔

Wrestling gives boys an outlet to challenge themselves physically and mentally in a safe, structured environment. It builds confidence, resilience, coordination, emotional control and problem solving under pressure, while teaching respect, discipline and how to work through discomfort without quitting.

Is your practice space real?

Mats, pads and barriers have been used to create confined spaces, obstacles and movement problems.
Members have been sparring and wrestling in spaces that are compromised due to space, objects, or other people.
The results have been fascinating.
People instantly change their behaviour when the environment changes. Distance changes. Footwork changes. Vision changes. Decision making changes. Pressure changes. New solutions appear.
This is a core principle of Ecological Dynamics. The environment shapes behaviour.
Real self defence does not happen in the middle of an empty gym floor with unlimited space and perfect movement. It happens near walls, furniture, cars, crowds, uneven surfaces and confined areas. If you never train to adapt to environments, how do you know your skills will transfer when space disappears?
The problem solving and adaptability we’ve seen this week has been outstanding.
