During Reconciliation Week, our College community came together to recognise, respect and celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. A range of meaningful activities took place across the College, providing students with opportunities to deepen their understanding of Indigenous history, culture and perspectives.
The week began with a special Welcome to Country, conducted by Willie Pepper, from the Boonwurrung Land and Sea Council. This was an important and respectful way to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land and to help students understand the significance of Country, culture and connection.
A major highlight was the visit from Boori Monty Pryor, a highly respected Indigenous author, storyteller and performer. Boori brought to life some of his well-known books and stories, sharing powerful insights into Indigenous culture, identity and history. His engaging presentation helped students connect with Aboriginal stories in a meaningful and memorable way.
Throughout the week, every class participated in activities linked to Reconciliation Week. These included classroom discussions, storytelling, art and craft activities, and explorations of Indigenous history and culture. Students were encouraged to reflect on the importance of respect, understanding, reconciliation and walking together towards a shared future.
The week culminated in Peretz Day, with students proudly wearing yellow to celebrate Peretz House. As part of the day, a range of activities took place to bring students together and support an important cause. During recess, students participated in the much-anticipated yellow rubber duck expedition, which created great excitement and house spirit. At lunchtime, students were invited to take part in art activities in the Art Room, giving them another opportunity to engage creatively with the themes of the week.
These Peretz Day activities were organised by Noa, our Peretz House Captain, together with Kirsty Patulo from the ELC. Their leadership and organisation helped make the day both enjoyable and meaningful for students across the College. As part of Peretz Day, money was collected for the Children’s Ground Foundation, an organisation that supports Indigenous children, families and communities. This fundraising effort helped students understand the importance of taking action and contributing positively to the lives of others.
Thank you to all staff who supported the activities across the week, and especially to Noa and Kirsty for their work in helping organise the Peretz Day activities. It was a meaningful and engaging week that reflected our College community’s commitment to learning, respect, inclusion and reconciliation.

Our students had a fantastic time representing the College at the AFL Jewish Schools Cup, showcasing skill, teamwork and sportsmanship.
Our girls team finished as runners up after a determined and spirited performance! All our students played with heart, supported one another and embraced the experience with enthusiasm.
A special highlight of the day was the opportunity to meet North Melbourne star Harry Sheezel - an inspiring moment for our students, especially knowing he once played in the very same Cup during his school years.

Our grade 6 students have been learning about fractions. Students applied their understanding of improper fractions, mixed numbers, and equivalent fractions by plotting them on number lines. Each student contributed a fraction, creating a shared collection that required careful reasoning and each team had to plot on their respective number line.
The twist was that the number lines weren’t marked precisely, so students had to estimate, justify, and negotiate where each fraction belonged. This pushed them to rely on their conceptual understanding of fractions, the relationships between numerators and denominators and how different forms of the fractions can be related as equivalent fractions.

This afternoon, our Pre-Prep to Year 4 students came together for a very special National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) experience! Students had the exciting opportunity to hear the story, Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller, read by the authors themselves and were captivated as they watched a live drawing session led by the illustrator, bringing the story to life before their eyes. Following the session, students enjoyed engaging follow-up activities connected to the book and proudly received a special certificate to take home to remember the experience. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the joy of storytelling, creativity and a shared love of books across our school community!

Our Preps have been very busy learning about living and non-living things. 🌱🦐✨
As part of our Inquiry unit students have been investigating the big question: How can we group plants and animals? We created our very own bean houses and have been eagerly watching our beans grow each day. Students have loved observing the changes, identifying and naming plant features such as roots, stems and leaves. They have been discovering what living things need to thrive. There has been so much excitement as tiny sprouts begin to appear and curiosity continues to bloom. We are growing our learning, one bean at a time!
Adding to the excitement, we were incredibly fortunate to have a special visit from David, a grandfather in our ELC, who shared insights about his fascinating work as a brain scientist. As part of our learning, David kindly helped set up a shrimp tank for us to care for, giving students a wonderful hands-on opportunity to observe and learn about living things up close. The shrimp have already sparked so much curiosity, conversation and excitement as students explore how we can care for and classify living things in our world.
This week, the College has been filled with the delicious scents of milkhik treats, as classes cooked up a storm! From blintses to pizzas, cheesecake to cheese tastings – and even a Yochi bar! Students learned about Shevues and explored its rich traditions and customs.
Today they proudly shared their learning at our vibrant Shevues assembly, singing songs and reciting poems in Yiddish and Hebrew.
Following the assembly the simkhe continued with the College community gathering for a range of fun activities, including an ice cream sundae station and a Seven Species relay race.
We are so grateful to our community for their generous support in collecting fresh fruit and vegetables to donate to OzHarvest in honour of this yontef.
We hope everyone enjoyed the activities, delicious treats, and joyful celebrations of this special time.
Wishing our entire College community a gutn yontef and chag sameach!

Yesterday our Sholem Aleichem College community proudly supported Go Grey in May, an important day dedicated to raising awareness and funds for brain cancer research and support.
For many years, the Gratzer family have led this initiative at Sholem in honour of their son and brother Gideon, a past student of the school. The Gratzer family organise collections, bake stalls and create opportunities for our students and families to come together for a meaningful cause.
We are grateful for their ongoing commitment and for the generosity of our community in supporting those affected by brain cancer.
Every conversation, every donation and every act of kindness helps make a difference.
May is recognised as Brain Cancer Awareness Month, with Go Grey in May helping raise awareness and funds for research and support. RCD Foundation-Robert Connor Dawes
