Great memory:
This photo was taken when Chuck Norris visited Stan Schmidt Sensei at his Melrose dojo in Johannesburg, South Africa. That night a few of us accompanied them to dinner. I remember how interesting it was listening to Chuck’s stories about Bruce Lee.
In 1979 he allowed us to use his dojo in Virginia Beach when the Springbok team was preparing to compete against the USA.

Our JKA-SKC Seminar this weekend was an amazing experience, with special guests from JKA HQ - Ogura Shihan, Okuma Shihan, and Kurihara Sensei.

It was a weekend full of valuable knowledge, sharp technical detail, and great energy across every session. A very special highlight was Kurihara Sensei’s kata demonstrations of Gojushiho Sho, Gankaku and Unsu - powerful, precise, and seriously impressive!

Thank you to all who attended and made it a memorable and inspiring 4 days!

Today is the anniversary of the passing of a very special man.
Rob Sachs Sensei was a friend of mine from the early 1970’s where we trained at Stan Schmidt Sensei’s Grove dojo. Rob was one of the reasons that I chose Melbourne as my place to live when I immigrated.
Rob was a very important part of our dojo who had a profound impact on many lives.
His memory continues to inspire so many of us, he was deeply cherished.

It was a pleasure to have another guest for training this evening. Lucas Gosling from JKA SKC Australia donned the karategi and joined us whilst on his holiday travels in Ireland and onwards to Spain. Safe travels Lucas, the dojo will always be open for you.

It’s not every day you get to share something this special.

We had the honour of interviewing Sensei Jess Geyer – a quiet force in JKA karate whose journey bridges continents, generations, and the legacy of a family that helped shape what we know today. In this photo, she wears her grandfather’s belt – Sensei Stan Schmidt’s – a symbol of everything passed down through sweat, time, and discipline.

The full interview is now live. It’s honest, reflective, and full of the kind of depth you don’t often find. We’re proud to share it.

(And yes… that shirt she’s wearing carries his words too.)

A group from our dojo has just returned from a tour to South Africa, where we had an amazing time. Thank you to Johan La Grange Sensei for inviting Jess and myself to teach a weeks classes at the SA JKA Honbu Dojo. The spirit and enthusiasm of the South African karateka made the teaching thoroughly enjoyable. It was an unforgettable experience, and it was so good to meet so many old friends. This trip was special. Thank you to the SA JKA leadership and in particular Warren Bainton and Mark Wainman who went out of their way to help us in so many ways.
