Sometimes you just have to think outside the square. Presenting something differently can peak new interest in a toy. Sensory blocks catching the sunlight instead of just sitting in a box.

One of the reasons I worry about children’s development now is that many ordinary community moments have quietly disappeared from childhood.

A trip to the butcher, saying hello to the cashier, waiting in line at the supermarket, helping carry groceries, watching a parent talk to another adult, or being asked a simple question at the counter all give children tiny opportunities to practise being part of the world.

These moments may seem small, but they help children learn how to wait, listen, look up, notice facial expressions, use their voice, stay near an adult, manage their body in a busy space, and build confidence with people outside their immediate family or classroom.

Online ordering and home delivery can absolutely be helpful. For many families, they are part of getting through a busy week.

But when too many real-world moments disappear, children can miss the repeated practice that helps them feel confident in everyday social situations.

This is not about making life harder for parents. It is about noticing what children are missing and gently bringing some of those experiences back where we can.

Children need real faces, real places, real jobs, real conversations, and real chances to be included in community life.

Development does not only happen in classrooms, therapy rooms, or structured programs. It happens in the small ordinary moments where children get to participate in the world around them.

A cooking game… The ingredient cards are placed upside down on the table. Choose a card and add the ingredient to the bowl. Flour, eggs, cheese, corn, capsicum, zucchini, carrot, milk and olive oil, mix them together and you have Cheesy Vegetable Muffins for lunch
