The piano was invented in 1700 by Bartolomeo Cristofori, keyboard maker for the wealthy Medici family in Florence. His motivation concerned a limitation of the harpsichord, whose keys do not respond, in terms of loudness, to varying finger pressure on the keys. Offering greater dynamic capabilities than the harpsichord, the piano eventually eclipsed the harpsichord in the late 1700s. Although it was invented in Italy, the piano’s early development occurred outside that country, by way of two distinct routes. One route was into Germany/Austria, the other was in the Iberian Peninsula.

In the latter, the Antunes family were beneficiaries of a royal writ by the king of Portugal D. José I in 1760, which granted them the sole privilege of piano manufacture and vending in Portugal for a period of ten years. This piano by Joaquim José Antunes is one of the earliest, best-preserved pianos known to survive, and one of only four extant instruments from the family.
