Age Discrimination Commissioner Robert Fitzgerald AM has welcomed the National Plan to End the Abuse and Mistreatment of Older People 2026–2036 as an important step toward safeguarding the autonomy, rights and dignity of older Australians.

The Plan responds to growing concern about financial elder abuse and recognises the need for culturally informed, community led responses, particularly in First Nations communities. It also outlines clear priorities for the next decade, including stronger prevention, improved community awareness, culturally safe and accessible support pathways, better data, a more capable workforce, and strengthened legal and policy protections.
