First Years Early Learning Elanora

Our painting board becomes a shared creative space as we work alongside a friend and let the music shape our movements. We sweep our brushes across the surface, noticing how different rhythms inspire different strokes and patterns. Conversation flows naturally as we talk about what we are making, respond to each other’s ideas, and enjoy the artwork growing between us. The combination of music, painting, and friendship encourages communication, coordination, and confidence while keeping the focus on the joy of creating together.

Our First Years paint studio is unlike any other because we create the paint ourselves. We use rocks to crush natural materials, exploring how colours can be made from the world around us before bringing our ideas to life through art. Every part of the process is filled with curiosity, from experimenting with natural resources to setting up studio lighting that makes us feel like professional artists. By combining creativity with investigation, we learn that art isn't just about the finished masterpiece, it's about discovering, experimenting, and appreciating the beauty of nature along the way.

There is always something new to discover during sensory play. We explore different textures, colours, and materials, using our hands and tools to investigate how they move, change, and feel. Every child approaches the experience in their own unique way, allowing imagination and curiosity to lead the learning. Through open-ended sensory play, we strengthen coordination, concentration, and problem solving while building confidence to explore the world around us.

NAIDOC Week creates meaningful learning experiences throughout our First Years community. From the beautiful cultural displays around our centre to dancing together to Indigenous music, we celebrate Australia's First Peoples through play, movement, and exploration. Our sensory activities encourage us to engage with natural materials while learning about the importance of Country, culture, and community. These experiences help us develop respect, curiosity, and a lifelong appreciation for the stories and traditions that continue to shape Australia today.

There is something so satisfying about rolling and kneading playdough with our hands while experimenting with different tools and textures. We carefully roll the dough into long shapes, flatten it with rolling pins, and use our fingers to fold and reshape it again and again. These repetitive movements strengthen our grip, improve coordination, and develop the fine motor skills that support so many everyday learning experiences. Best of all, the calming sensory nature of playdough gives us the freedom to create, explore, and express ourselves in our own unique way.

Our whiteboard becomes a place of focus and achievement as we independently write numbers from 1 to 20, carefully thinking about each formation as we progress. We celebrate every number we complete, building confidence and persistence while strengthening the fine motor control that supports future writing and learning. Once our work is finished, we happily erase the board and prepare it for the next friend, embracing the shared responsibility that helps our rooms run so smoothly at First Years.

Miss Kanae's story has us completely captivated as we sit together with Miss Sarah and Miss Brooke, following every page with curiosity and excitement. We watch closely, listen carefully, and eagerly predict what might happen next while sharing smiles and wonder with our friends. The anticipation builds with every turn of the page until we finally discover the ending together. Storytelling experiences like these foster a love of books, encourage rich language development, and create opportunities for shared conversations that strengthen our sense of belonging within our First Years community.

Our wooden doll house quickly becomes the perfect setting for imaginative adventures as we welcome some very colourful new residents. Bright alien friends move from room to room, exploring every corner of the house and creating stories that only our imaginations can tell. We carefully decide where everyone will live, what jobs they might have, and where their next mission will take them... but shhh, they are trying very hard not to blow their cover! Through open ended role play, we strengthen communication, storytelling, problem solving, and creativity while building a world where anything is possible.
