The term "algebra":
Al-Khwarizmi was a well-known and significant Persian mathematician who lived and worked in Baghdad around the beginning of the ninth century, a time when the Baghdad Caliphate was a scientific and mathematical powerhouse.
The Arabic word "algebra" is derived from the word "al-jabr," which appears in the title of his most significant work and refers to the balancing of terms on both sides of an equation. Al-jabr means "the restoration of damaged portions." The word Al-Khwarizmi itself became known as "algorithm" in contemporary European languages.
