NOBODY has time to be writing essays every.single.time they sit down to study English. This would make me HATE English.

Practice essays are just one way to revise. Yet across my years teaching, students prioritise their other subjects because the practice questions take less time, energy, and there's a right or wrong answer.

You have SO MANY OTHER OPTIONS THOUGH! This post only lists a few but maybe it's enough to get you doing... something?

Scroll across to see:
Example #1 A quick collage I threw together for We Have Always Lived in the Castle (ily Jonas) - this took me about 10 minutes (ily Canva) and I know if I stuck that in my book I'm WAY more likely to remember the Chief hat, or Merricat's werewolf reference.

Example #2 I googled The Memory Police and this Guardian review was one of the first to pop up. I like to think I'm pretty well across this text, but this gave me some cool insights into what birds could represent that I definitely hadn't thought of before. Watch me try and bring the idea of 'migration' into my next essay!! Absolutely worth the 5 minute Google and read 🫡

Curious to see a really successful way to approach a pesky 'how' topic? Not to mention it also has a quote! 😅

It does all the right things:

✍🏽 resolves the topic
✍🏽 analyses relevant evidence
✍🏽 refers to views and values
✍🏽 utilises higher order vocab
✍🏽 reads fluently

Make sure you're following Amy Cook and tag a friend who NEEDS to lock in. Simple as that, we'll DM you a link to the full 10/10 essay!

It might just be enough to motivate you to start that holiday homework you've been putting off ✍🏽

Hello to all of you who are studying Tessa Hadley's collection of short stories!

In an ideal world, you would learn each of Hadley’s stories in depth and know all of her characters like they’re your best friends. But let’s be honest - 10 different stories is a lot for anyone. And you have other subjects! Other content to memorise! I get it! So, if the best you can do is choose a few stories, well - so be it.

Which brings me to.. ‘An Abduction.’

Hadley’s first story in the anthology is absolutely PACKED with great evidence you could use in any essay. It’s one that I personally think is worth knowing super well. You can use this story as a strong starting point, and make connections to other characters and other stories.

A third person omniscient narrator tells us about a character - our bored, naive Jane, and her experience of the complex adult world that is far more mature than anything she has so far been privy to in her fifteen years. Hadley’s narrator then jumps ahead thirty years or so and reveals to us who Jane became as an adult and how these experiences stayed with her.

If you want my notes on this story (yes, these notes include quotes! And symbols! And links to other stories!), shoot me a message or comment below and I’m happy to share! 🤗
