Large Scale Pouring:
To extend the children’s interest in pouring I offered recycled large ice-cream tubs donated by one of our families to provide a different type of pouring challenge for them- “power pouring”. It takes strength to lift a bucket of water and also requires strength to be able to control the rate of water flowing from the bucket.
Tom Bedard outlines some of the physical skills needed to pour including flexion, eye-to hand coordination, arm and body extension, balance, dexterity, power, and coordination. He also poses the following:
Could pouring be a foundational skill for writing considering that pouring facilitates practice in gripping objects and completing complex hand movements? If so, we would do well to offer children more and varied opportunities to pour, including precision pouring and power pouring on multiple levels to promote extension and balance so they master the art of pouring.
