NAPLAN Writing Tips for Year 3 Students
📕1. Read the question carefully
Make sure you understand what you need to write.
Is it a narrative (a story) or a persuasive text (an opinion piece)?
Circle or underline key words in the question before you start.
📕2. Plan before you write
Spend about 3–5 minutes planning.
Write down:
•Beginning, middle and ending (for narrative)
•Three strong reasons (for persuasive writing)
A quick plan helps your ideas stay clear and organised.
📕3. Write a strong introduction
Start in an interesting way.
For narrative:
•Begin with action or dialogue.
Example: Bang! The door slammed shut behind me.
For persuasive:
•Clearly state your opinion.
Example: I strongly believe that schools should have longer lunch breaks.
📕4. Use descriptive vocabulary
Use interesting words instead of simple ones.
Instead of:
•good → fantastic, impressive
•big → enormous, massive
•sad → disappointed, miserable
Try to show feelings and details.
📕5. Use correct punctuation
Remember:
•Capital letters at the start of sentences
•Full stops
•Question marks
•Speech marks for dialogue
Example:
“Wait for me!” shouted Mia.
📕6. Use paragraphs
Start a new paragraph when:
•A new idea begins
•A new person speaks
•The setting changes
This makes your writing easier to read.
📕7. Check your spelling
Leave 5 minutes at the end to check:
•Spelling
•Missing words
•Capital letters
•Full stops
Read your work slowly and carefully.
📕8. Finish properly
For narrative:
•Solve the problem
•End clearly
For persuasive:
•Restate your opinion
•End strongly
Example:
For these reasons, mobile phones should not be allowed at school.
