Brain cells need neurotransmitters like dopamine and noradrenaline. Dopamine is associated with reward, motivation and focus. Noradrenaline plays a part in alertness, arousal and response to stress. Children and adults with ADHD have a reduction of these 2 neurotransmitters within their brain cells. Stimulant medications target this reduction but work differently. Methylphenidate (Ritalin) inhibits the reuptake of these from the synaptic space back into the presynaptic neuron, resulting in the concentration of neurotransmitters in the synaptic space. Dexamphetamine based medications work in a similar way but also stimulate the release of dopamine and noradrenalin out of the presynaptic neuron into the synaptic space. https://adhdgotoguide2.com/
