🇩🇪♻️ A VERY GERMAN THING: PFAND

In Germany, an empty bottle isn’t rubbish.

It’s money. 💰😂

You finish your drink, keep the bottle, take it back to the supermarket and get your Pfand back.

And Germans take this VERY seriously.

You might even see someone walking around with a bag full of empty bottles thinking:

“That’s not rubbish. That’s €3.20.” In Germany, your empty plastic bottle is basically worth 45 AU-cents. 💰

🇩🇪 Pfand = deposit

So next time you see a German carefully putting an empty bottle aside…

Don’t touch it.
It might be worth something.

🇩🇪🌳 A VERY GERMAN THING: Spazieren gehen

Germans have a hobby that involves… going nowhere. 😄

It’s called Spazieren gehen.

You walk. You talk. You look at trees. You discuss the weather. You walk some more. And eventually someone says:

“So… shall we head back?” 😂

A Spaziergang doesn’t need a destination, a reason or even a plan. It’s simply about getting outside, clearing your head and catching up.

So when a German asks:

🇩🇪 “Gehen wir spazieren?”

They basically mean:

“Let’s go outside, clear our heads, talk about everything and absolutely have nowhere to be.” 🌳😄

Now you know what a Spaziergang is!

🎄✨ Christmas in July at East Melbourne German Language Centre ✨🎄

Who says you have to wait until December to celebrate Christmas? 😉 Last Friday, we brought a little bit of Germany to Melbourne with our annual Christmas in July celebration.

There was homemade Glühwein 🍷, delicious food, lots of laughter and plenty of festive singing. Together we enjoyed traditional German Christmas carols like Stille Nacht, In der Weihnachtsbäckerei, and O Tannenbaum – and everyone joined in! 🎶🇩🇪

One of the best things about learning a language is becoming part of a community. It was wonderful to see our students and teachers chatting, laughing and getting to know each other outside the classroom.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along and made the evening so special. ❤️

🇩🇪 German Fun Fact 🇩🇪

Think all Germans tell the time the same way? Think again! ⏰

If you learn German, you might hear "Viertel fünf" and wonder...

"Wait... it's only quarter past four!" 🤯

Here's the twist:

🕓 4:15
🇩🇪 West Germany: Viertel nach vier
🇩🇪 Parts of (East) Germany: Viertel fünf

🕟 4:30
Everyone agrees: Halb fünf (half to five!)

🕔 4:45
🇩🇪 West Germany: Viertel vor fünf
🇩🇪 Parts of (East) Germany: Dreiviertel fünf

The "eastern" version looks ahead to the next full hour, while the western version describes the current hour.

There isn't one "correct" way—both are perfectly normal, depending on where you are in Germany! 🇩🇪

🇩🇪 Da brat mir doch einer ein Ei! 🍳

German is full of expressions that make absolutely no sense... until they do. 😄

If someone says "Da brat mir doch einer ein Ei!", they don't actually want a fried egg.

It means:
🤯 "Well, I'll be!"
😲 "I can't believe it!"
🙃 "Now that's surprising!"

Learning German isn't just about grammar – it's about discovering wonderfully weird expressions that make native speakers smile.

There are far more German greetings than many learners realise! Here are some common ones:

Standard

😊 Hi
🌞 Guten Morgen
☀️ Guten Tag
🌆 Guten Abend

Casual

Na?
Na, alles klar?
Hey!
Tach! (short for Guten Tag, mainly central Germany)
Jo! (very casual, Berlin)

Regional

🌊 Moin (Northern Germany – all day, not just mornings!)
🌊 Moin Moin (more common for tourists than locals 😉)
🍺 Servus (Bavaria, Austria, parts of Baden-Württemberg)
⛰️ Grüß Gott (Southern Germany & Austria)
🤝 Grüß dich (informal, south)
🤝 Grüß Sie (formal, south)
🍇 Gude (Hesse, especially Frankfurt)
🌲 Griaß di / Griaß eich (Bavarian dialect)
🥨 Habedere (Bavaria, very informal)
🌄 Salü (near the French/Swiss border)
🇨🇭 Grüezi (Swiss German—not standard German, but you'll hear it in Switzerland)
We wanted to include Hallo, Hi, Hey, Guten Morgen, Guten Tag, Guten Abend, Moin, Servus, Grüß Gott, Grüß dich, Na?, Tach, Gude.....but only Hallo, Moin and Servus fitted. 🤷‍♀️😄

That highlights just how many ways there are to say "hello" in German!
