Top Arts 2022 - at the NGV in Federation Square - features Kew High School's Clay Gaia-Butcher's piece "Spores of Confidence" . Clay is a student from the 2021 Studio Arts cohort.

For 28 years, the NGV’s annual Top Arts exhibition has celebrated the artistic dynamism and creative vitality of young Victorians. Showcasing the exceptional work of students who have completed VCE Art or Studio Arts in 2021, the exhibition highlights the resilience and creativity of young artists who have used art and design to explore, and understand, the world around them.

Comprising work selected from applicants across Victoria, the exhibition encompasses a range of media including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, digital and mixed media. The exhibition includes reflections on identity, time, home, social issues and our connection to the natural world.

This year’s exhibitors were selected based on key criteria including conceptual development, technical excellence, aesthetic considerations, awareness of past and contemporary art practices, individuality and innovation.

This exhibition highlights the NGV’s strong commitment to arts education, as well as its role as a platform for young people to express their diverse ideas, attitudes and beliefs.

Special Olympics Victoria 2022 ✨👊

Congratulations to Kew High School's Owen Roberts. Owen competed in the State Athletics for Special Olympics at Casey Fields on the 23rd and 24th April. Owen did very well getting lots of medals and placings.
1st Gold for 800 metres
3rd Bronze for 400 m and Turbo throw (Javelin)
4th in Relay
6th 200 m

TOPshots 2021– 22 ✨👏

Congratulations to Sebastian Crupi who is a past student at Kew High school in 2021, he will be represented in this exhibition. Sebastian created his work in Studio Arts class. It is an appropriation of a work by Olive Cotton, Tea cup ballet, 1935. Sebastian’s work focuses on the ideas of “Routine” - ‘The coffee routine’ and ‘The everyday, the mundane’. A great achievement to be represented in this exhibition and to be considered for this esteemed prize.

TOPshots is an annual celebration of emerging photomedia artists at MGA. Established more than a decade ago, this award and exhibition continues to showcase exceptional photographic work produced by students who have completed the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) subjects of Art, Media and Studio Arts, as well as the International Baccalaureate (IB) Visual Arts.

The artworks displayed in this exhibition have been selected from a large pool of entries, and represent a small sample of the creative talent that emerged out of Melbourne’s high schools in 2021. MGA is proud to have the opportunity to foreground and acknowledge the excellence of young photomedia artists in our community while providing a vital platform for these artists to share and exhibit their work.

Connecting and creating a vertical garden

Last Thursday students, staff, a past parent and a few alumni helped to rejuvenate an important part of the school – this is what alumnus, Danny Loats ’17 had to say about the experience:

“It was such a lovely morning at our old school, out by the vertical garden opposite the Renaissance Theatre, feeling all the vibes. Organised by Enviro Leader, Kristin Lomax, designed by School Gardener, Phil and Coordinated by Alumni Program Coordinator, Elise Dunstan, it was an opportunity for members of the community to come together, get our hands dirty and make a small contribution to the school.

We were so lucky to be led by the very patient and knowledgeable gardener Phil who taught us about a variety of plants and how to best plant them into the wall using compost, potting mix and mulch, bearing with us through the steep learning curve. We felt very special to be able to hear Phil’s insights on gardening methods and how to create more sustainable spaces. His wisdom on life in general was incredible enlightening, and the immediate greening up of the notoriously harsh looking space felt so rewarding!

It’s rare that I make time to get my hands dirty in nature and feeling relaxed and inspired afterwards. I was reminded that I should do this more to feel calm, connected and conscious. I think this rejuvenation morning speaks to the nature of the KHS alumni program as not just being about fostering career networks but also being about promoting wellness and a sense of true community. While it was just a small gesture, Nick Thornely ’11, Bev Middleton (past parent) and I hope our involvement will be part of an enduring positive impact for future generations.”

The Kew High School STEM Centre is in the final stages of construction. We expect to be able to begin learning and teaching in our amazing new building at the beginning of Term 2 this year. Our Science, Technology, Mathematics and Arts teams are working together to ensure the experience of learning in the vibrant, collaborative environment, using the newest of technologies will prepare Kew High School students for dynamic futures in STEM. Kew High School was the recipient of a $9.75 million grant to build a new STEM Centre alongside the current West Wing to support students in their preparation for their futures. Construction has been steadily progressing since 2020 with an expected date of completion later this year.

What is one thing you wish did more of or less of in Yr. 12?

This was one of the questions asked of the alumni panel comprising of: Nicolette Kamberis ’14, Marcus Vaiano ’14, Jane Nguyen ’19, Spencer Beedle-Moulding ’17, Ella Cehun ’13 and Kevin Nguyen ’17 last week. Each alum gave the Class of 2022 helpful advice to prepare for and navigate their final year of school. Special thanks to Ella for making the trip from Ballarat to support the students!

The Yr.12s loved hearing about these former students’ post school pathways including pursuing psychology, engineering, science, arts, medicine and commerce, going to different tertiary institutions, travelling, interning and doing different types of work – it was such a diverse panel and so interesting!

Kudos to the Yr.12s for being so attentive and for seizing the opportunity to ask further questions of the alumni after the organised session. We look forward to seeing, meeting and hearing more from alumni in 2022.

The School was thrilled to welcome six alumni (Gemma Penglase ’19, Connor Kinkead ’19, Aaron Korczak-Krezeczowski ’19, Siobhan Galligan ’12, Anton Jensen ’17 and Alex Renaudin ’17) and past parent and staff member, Jock Murphy back to school last week to help Gardening guru and “KHS icon”, Phil with a couple of gardening projects.

Alumni and some Yr.7 and Yr.9 students spent much of the day preparing the wall outside the Theatre to be planted out as a vertical garden in 2022. Coordinators of the day, Kristen Lomax (Enviro Club) and Elise Dunstan (Ourschool) were very impressed with the work ethic and collaboration between the students and alumni tackling this big and not-so-glamourous but very important project! Gardener Phil was also rapt to have the support of so many members of the school community pitching in and working together.

One of the highlights of the day was alumni sharing their post school pathways, school experiences and advice with the students to inform, inspire and encourage them. Each participant was treated to a healthy lunch, gifted a new pair of gardening gloves and a home-grown seedling or plant to encourage further greening of spaces both at home and at school.
The staff love seeing alumni on-campus and are so grateful for their support. We look forward to having more students, alumni and past parents involved in different gardening projects around the School in 2022. Please email [email protected] if you would like help out in this capacity next year.

One of the core elements of our alumni program is to have former students facilitate meaningful work experience placements for Yr.10 students.

A big thank-you to KHS alum, Julijana Todorovic ‘12 and the law firm she works for, Slater + Gordon for hosting student Sienna. Julijana said she was impressed with the questions Sienna asked, and Sienna enjoyed learning about the nature of the work. Julijana said she would look out for her in future years – connections are so important!

Thanks once again, Julijana and well done, Sienna for seizing this rare and wonderful learning opportunity.

Congratulations to Michael Brandt!
Winner of the Drama Victoria Teaching Excellence Award

Of course, those of us at Kew High School know that Michael brings a level of passion and commitment to his work that is extraordinary. The high expectations he has of students is only matched by the expectations he has of himself. His outstanding contribution to the teaching of Theatre Studies and Drama has now been recognised by Drama Victoria.
