School readiness isn’t about memorising letters. It’s about the confidence to walk into a room full of strangers and think: I’ve got this.

That’s what we build here. In small groups of 6–8 children, over 10 weeks, one term at a time.

We currently have 10 spots available for Central Coast families. Sessions run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9:30–11am, term-based. Your child holds their spot for the year. 🐝

“Is my child ready for kindy?” 🙋‍♀️

This is the question I hear from Central Coast mums every single term and the answer is almost never as simple as yes or no.

School readiness isn’t just about knowing the alphabet. It’s about the stuff that matters on Day 1:

✅ Separating from you without falling apart
✅ Following simple instructions in a group
✅ Sitting and focusing (even for just 10 minutes)
✅ Connecting with other kids
✅ Managing the basics — lunchbox, toilet, shoes

When your child gives up before they start it’s not about attitude. It’s about what they’ve learned to expect from hard moments.

Learned helplessness is incredibly common in little ones, especially when the grown-ups around them love them deeply and want to help. (Which is all of us, right? 🙋‍♀️But at school, your child will need to have a go without someone swooping in immediately. That sense of “I can try” is one of the most important things we can build before Kindergarten.

The really reassuring thing? It shifts. Gently, gradually with small changes to how we respond at home.

They need you and a few simple habits woven into your everyday.

Phonological awareness (the ability to hear and play with the sounds inside words) is the foundation that reading is built on. And the beautiful thing is, you can build it through the most ordinary moments of your day.

Most parents jump straight to letters and phonics when they want to help their child with reading. 📖

And I get it — letters feel logical. Visible. Something you can point to and practise.

But there’s an entire step that comes before letters that most people don’t know about — and skipping it is one of the most common reasons children struggle with reading later on.

It’s called phonological awareness. The ability to hear the sounds inside words.

Before a child can make sense of the letter C, they need to hear that cat starts with a /k/ sound. Before phonics clicks, they need to know that cat and hat sound the same at the end. Before they can blend sounds into words, they need to hear that sunshine has two beats.

And here’s the beautiful part — you don’t need worksheets or flashcards to build it. Just:

→ Nursery rhymes and silly word games
→ Clapping syllables in words and names
→ Being read to — often and with expression
→ Rich conversation every single day

If your child isn’t reading yet — this is where to look first. Not the alphabet. This.

A mum once asked me to skip everything and just teach her daughter to read.

In one session.

I understood her. I really did.

Another child at daycare was already reading, and that quiet comparison panic had set in. The kind that makes you feel like maybe your child is falling behind, like maybe you should be doing more, pushing a little harder, moving a little faster.

But here’s what I needed her to understand and what I want you to understand too:

Her daughter was learning to read. Every single week. It just didn’t look like it from the outside.

Because reading isn’t something that starts when a child picks up a book and decodes words.

Reading starts long before that. It starts with:

→ Rich conversations and growing vocabulary

→ Learning to listen and hold attention

→ Hearing and playing with the sounds inside words

→ Falling in love with stories

→ Building the confidence to try something hard and keep going when it’s tricky

That is the reading work. And it is every bit as important — more important, actually — than sitting a four-year-old down with a phonics worksheet and hoping something sticks.
