It's World Teachers Day! We’d like to say big heartfelt thanks to all educators.

Ourschool, an education charity, is partnering with Geelong High School to help us grow an alumni network. Ourschool created this video to help celebrate World Teachers’ Day as a nod to all the wonderful educators out there. We would love to hear from you alumni - who was your favourite / most inspirational teacher was during school days?

A special thanks to Ebony Storrar, class of 2019, for her kind words about the importance of Maths teachers.

FAVOURITE MEMORIES OF YOUR SCHOOL DAYS?

There are so many but probably year twelve camp, interschool sports days, the music department, and or participating in the Footloose production. These events helped strengthen existing friendships and make new ones. Honestly though – despite sounding like a nerd – I thoroughly enjoyed all of my schooling, from classes to the teachers to the friendships to the new things learned, and I don’t really have any bad memories.

WHO WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER AND WHY?

Again, so many. Mr.Kolsche just because he was such amazing support and even though he was my math teacher we would always talk about music and history and literally anything! I loved Mr. Williams, Mr. Kilfoyle, Mr. Brentnal, Mr. Kaberry, and Mrs. O’Keefe (many more can fit on that list) as they made it so easy to enjoy the subject they taught and therefore made school so much more engaging, plus they are so easy to get along with.

WHAT JOB OR COURSE ARE YOU DOING NOW?

I am currently studying for a bachelor in Paramedicine and bachelor in nursing at ACU. I am also a camp leader at Cottage by the Sea.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB OR COURSE?

The versatility of my course is amazing. One week I am doing a placement in a remote nursing home helping with palliative patients and the next I am with the royal flying doctors service doing a week worth of overnight shifts. This versatility then translates into job opportunities and has really opened my prospects up to being able to help people in so many ways and do so all around the world.

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE TO CURRENT STUDENTS?

Say yes to everything! (Obviously know your limits and time management but still). Doing so gives you so many opportunities and you will honestly enjoy school so much. Make sure you say yes to things that you wouldn’t usually be your style as well because it opens you up to new experiences, new friends, and a whole new perspective. You might find yourself simultaneously being in the band, production, debating team, sports teams and so much more. Geelong High has so much to offer, you’ve just got to say yes.

Thanks for staying in touch Ebony - GHS staff and alumni will read this with interest :)

Seeing Geelong High School Alumni shine brightly is the best ✨

Jack Nyhof has always aimed high and showed good work ethic in a bid to achieve his goals. When Jack returned to school in 2019 to chat with current students he showed excellent communication skills and spoke honestly about chipping away at long term goals by taking lots of small steps.
Jack has crafted a career in the media starting in regional media and is now on the centre stage mixing it some of Australia’s best journalists.

Bravo Jack Nyhof. Please continue to star 🌟

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Taylah Arnold, class of 2016

Taylah is working very hard as an early career professional in nursing in Geelong and has worked in two different roles that are both very interesting but feature people-centred care. Firstly nursing in the general medical-oncology ward at the Epworth Hospital (including end of life care) where she developed her foundation nursing skills and developed a clear sense of self (as a nurse). Now she's moved to Monash IVF as a nurse and is upskilling in the specialized area of fertility.
Together we discuss insights and reflections about working as a nurse and in the health sector; she encourages students to consider further studies in nursing as secure employment will always be available.

Thank you Taylah for being a kind and caring nurse and working so hard throughout covid. You're like sunshine on a rainy day!

In this short clip, Taylah discusses the value of getting a health degree and establishing a career in the sector.

Alums, anyone in our group taught by Tessa Kirk?
She’s one of the greatest 🌟🙌 If you want to send her a message of congratulations or support post it below.
And, for the broader Geelong High School Alumni group it’s great to know the high calibre of teachers at your old school.

Best of luck Tessa; you’re already a winner in our book! 😍

Geelong High School couldn’t be any prouder of what Tessa has achieved in her short 2 years at GHS! The school, staff and students are incredibly lucky to have you as part of our team! All the very best with the announcement of the winners on October 22nd.

Dear Alumni,

STEPS FOR CHANGE

Our Senior VCAL students are running a challenge and you’re invited! The purpose is to get active, feel good and work as a team (even through lockdowns). These students are motivated to support the Royal Children’s Hospital which we all know is a wonderful organization that if your family ever needs it then it means the world to you.

If you’d like to join in your points will count towards your old house and you’ll get kudos from your old teachers! Send in a photo of you in action as we’d love to stay connected and get a sense of your life after school.

Keep active, do your STEPS FOR CHANGE and enjoy being outdoors in spring!

Alumni kudos to Jennifer Cromarty.
Jennifer is committed to our community in Geelong and young people. She’s kindly offered to visit our school and covid restrictions have defeated us twice. That won’t hold us back! Jennifer will visit our students soon and inspire them about the future for Geelong.
Here’s a recent article she’s written - insightful & important to acknowledge that greater connections are the essence of alumni relations.
Thanks Jen💫

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Jonathan Schuster
Class of 2005

Jon was committed to visiting Geelong High School again and persevered throughout multiple lockdowns to get back on stage, in Shenton just like he did 15 years ago.

Hearing Jonathan chat about his memories of school and the realities of life as a comedy actor, set+prop designer and maker and working full time to pay the bills was an enlightening experience. He really hit the mark for the students who are fully involved in our school production of The Addams Family as they've been getting crafty on our sets.

Jon offered sage advice to the yr 11-12 Theatre Studies students: be funny on stage and always be an interested and nice person off stage. And connect will all the theatre people - roadies, prop makes, costume, lighting, techies...Living by these words has helped Jon be employed, happy and very interesting.

A special thank you to Jonathan Schuster for making time to get to Geelong and our school. Mr Mantelli was thrilled to see you again! Keep the laughs coming.

We couldn't be prouder of our alumni Samuel Formica, class of 2010. Last week, Samuel made time to participate in an online event streamed across 24 Victoria DET secondary schools. The aim of the session was to broaden students horizons about careers and pathways in the law. Samuel's personal story was enlightening to alternative pathways into entering the law, ceasing the moment, maintaining energy by participating in many activities and demonstrating a strong work ethic.

Thanks again Samuel.
