We were so impressed watching one of our clever friends carefully work to tie their material around the plastic stick.
With incredible fine motor control and hand–eye coordination, they used their little fingers to manipulate the material, carefully wrapping and tying it around the stick. This required patience, precision and plenty of concentration!

We could see just how hard they were thinking as they worked through the process, taking their time to figure out how to hold the material, where to place it and how to make it stay securely in place.

Rather than giving up when it was tricky, they persisted and kept trying until they were happy with the result.

After observing our blueberry bush as it flowered, the children were curious to learn more about blueberries and where they come from. As our bush has not fruited yet, we brought in a punnet of fresh blueberries for the children to explore.

Experiences like this help children build connections between plants, food and the natural world, while encouraging curiosity about where our food comes from. They also provide opportunities to develop language as children describe what they notice, share their opinions and talk about their experiences.

Although our blueberry bush has not produced fruit just yet, the children enjoyed exploring blueberries and learning that, with time, flowers can develop into the delicious fruit we eat.

We’ve been exploring our beautiful Australia through art and storytelling!
Inspired by Aboriginal rock paintings, the children worked together to create their own cave, painting the outside, adding handprints and exploring Aboriginal symbols on the inside. Through this experience, they are developing an appreciation and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. 🎨🤎

There has been plenty of talk about the upcoming footy Grand Final, and the excitement has certainly made its way into our conversations and play.

Following the children’s interest in the footy, educators invited the children to create their own flags to show their support for the teams. The children explored different ways to decorate their flags and then worked hard to attach them to the sticks. This simple experience provided wonderful opportunities to develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and concentration as the children attempted to tie, wrap and secure their flag pieces around the sticks. Some parts proved a little tricky, so educators offered encouragement, demonstrations and support when needed, allowing the children to keep trying and experience the satisfaction of doing it themselves.

This gave the children an opportunity to explore belonging and community. Sport is such a meaningful part of many Australian communities, bringing families, friends and different generations together. By connecting with something the children are hearing about and experiencing within their own families and wider community, we are valuing their interests, experiences and sense of belonging.

We believe children are capable, competent learners — and sometimes that means trusting them with real tools and real responsibilities.

Using a pencil sharpener might seem like a simple task, but it builds confidence, independence, fine motor skills and a sense of responsibility. When we have high expectations of children and give them the opportunity to have a go, they often show us just how capable they really are. 💛

Real tools. Real responsibility. Real learning.
