A GOLD COIN CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE! 💜

From 19th October – 1st November, GKR Karate is proudly supporting RizeUp Australia, helping women and children impacted by domestic and family violence rebuild their lives.
We invite all our GKR Karate students and families to come together, wear your purple belt and bring a gold coin donation to class.

A small act of kindness can make a meaningful difference to another family's fresh start.

Let's come together as a karate community and show the power of kindness, generosity and support.

Every contribution counts! 💜

Friday night class!!

This was our last night at karate in eagleby for two weeks.

We did a stretching warm up, followed by some team races, involving running, basic strikes and basic blocks.

We then really stripped back our kicks, working with a pool noodle on our knee to focus on our 90 degree angles. We then put all of that into practice by feather touching with our partner.

Ending the night with some kata and a game of sneaky ninjas.

We also got to welcome a new student, please welcome Jax!!

Mondays regular class.

Class started with a game of shoulders. We were only allowed to use 1 hand to force us to block and strike with the same hand.
Then we went straight into our grading combos.
After this we split the class and did kata training.

Our lower belts went through 2nd kata a move at a time and reset. By the end I was so impressed that our students had nailed the pattern. Congrats!

Our higher belts went through their katas by the numbers and own timing.

Class then finished with a kata showcase.

Mondays kids class.

Students had high energy so we warmed up with jogging up and down the dojo and doing start jumps and sumo squats.
Then we got straight i to our basics with a partner.

After our basics we had fun with the kick shield push game. Congrats to Sarah for taking out top stop.

We then finished off class with the stance game to help strengthen our Long Forward Stance.

Mondays regular class we did a kumite focused class.
All students without their kumite gear i recommend getting it so we can start doing more fun kumite drills and activities.

Class started with our usual base line warmup but each line we did kicks. Our higher belts alternated through all the kicks while lower belts just focused on Mae Geri.

Then we did some kumite drills in partners, one just stood there while the other practiced their feather touch punches.
After this we did teams of 3 doing 2 vs 1 and the single person could only block, teaching awareness of surroundings and movement to stay safe with multiple attackers.

Class finished with a showcase of Kata.

Mondays kids class we did a high energy warm up, jogging around the dojo and doing sumo squats or star jumps randomly.
After that we did Mae Geri into the kick shield with our partner while moving up and down the dojo.
Our higher belt had to mix it up with all the kicks depending on where sensei moved the focus mits, teaching focus and reactions.
Then to finish off we did a couple of rounds of special tails where everyone had 3 lives.

In mid-June, several of our Queensland, New South Wales and Victorian senior group volunteered to complete a Homes set-up with our charity partner, RizeUp Australia.

RizeUp provides all the practical items needed for victim-survivors of family and domestic violence to make a fresh start, including furniture and other household items that help transform empty houses into homes.

When each of our GKR teams arrived at their location, they were greeted by a RizeUp driver, an empty house and a truck filled with flatpacks and homewares. The teams set about unloading the truck, assembling the flatpacks, making beds, filling pantries and carefully decorating the space. This included fitting out children’s bedrooms and providing them with the materials needed to start at a new school.

After 4+ hours of work at each location, the transformation from house to home left a lasting memory for all involved. With the knowledge that a family would be entering their newly furnished home in the coming days, each team member took comfort in knowing that they had helped create a new beginning for someone in need.

We are incredibly grateful to RizeUp for the work they do and for the opportunity to be involved in their Homes program. We also appreciate the amazing support shown by all of our students and instructors who participate in the Stop Domestic & Family Violence Purple Belt Campaign. Your involvement means a lot, not only to RizeUp and the families they help, but also to GKR Karate as a whole.

If you would like to volunteer with RizeUp to help setting up Homes, information can be found here https://www.rizeup.com.au/volunteer
