From Classrooms to Creek Beds: Nature Scientists in Action! 🌿

Today our Year 3/4 and 5/6 students swapped their desks for gumboots and headed down to Dungay Creek for our annual Water Bug Survey.

For over 20 years, Dungay Public School students have stepped beyond the classroom and into the natural world, collecting data, observing ecosystems and learning as real-life nature scientists. It's experiences like these that make Dungay PS unique and bring our values of curiosity, connection and learning to life.

Students explored the creek, identified water bugs, monitored the health of the waterway and, to everyone's delight, spotted our two resident eels making their annual appearance!

One student summed up the day perfectly: "It doesn't feel like school when you're learning in the creek, but you learn so much more."

At Dungay PS, you never quite know where our Friday Nature Science lessons will lead us. One week it might be investigating local wildlife, the next it could be exploring a creek, collecting scientific data or discovering something unexpected in our own backyard.

This is learning with purpose. Learning through experience. Learning connected to our community.

It was wonderful to see the sun shining today and our students back outside making the most of our amazing playground after all the wet weather.

A space filled with laughter, play, and connection, just the way it should be. We hope everyone has a safe, dry weekend!

Lest We Forget — Dungay Remembers

Today at Dungay Public School, we paused as a community to honour the names etched on our historical Honour Roll, names that are not just part of history, but part of our story.

We would love to hear from our community: Do you or your family have any connection to the names on our Honour Roll?

Each name represents a young person who once walked a path much like our students do today… who answered a call far greater than themselves. As those names were read aloud, there was a quiet sense of pride, reflection and gratitude across our school.

Our students stood tall, showed deep respect and, most importantly, began to understand that remembrance is not just about the past, it is about how we live today.

At Dungay, we honour their legacy by being our best, by looking after one another, and by living out the values that make our community strong.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

Do you remember your school Easter Hat Parade?

The excitement… the creativity… the proud walk down the “runway”… and maybe a few hats that didn’t quite survive the journey to school.

At Dungay, we’ve held onto that magic, but added something pretty special.

Our Easter Hat Parade isn’t just about creativity… it is about connection to our environment.

Our students designed and created their hats using natural and sustainable materials, flowers, leaves, bark, and treasures from the world around them.

The result?
Not just hats… but beautiful, living pieces of art that celebrate both Easter and the environment we’re so lucky to learn in.

As you scroll through the photos, you’ll see hats that are floral, thoughtful, and uniquely Dungay. This is what happens when creativity meets care for our world.

What happens when you mix stamina, determination and a whole lot of Dungay spirit…? You get The Dungay Ditch infused with Harmony Day.

Today, our oval transformed into something pretty special, not just a race, but a true test of grit, resilience and heart. The Dungay Ditch isn’t your typical fun run. It’s an elimination-style challenge where every lap asks the question: How much have you got left to give? And time and time again, our students answered: Plenty.

Set against our beautiful, natural surroundings, the atmosphere was electric. DJ tunes pumping, students cheering each other on, parents lining the course with pride… It had a real festival feel. And in true Dungay fashion, it wasn’t just about who finished first, it was about every child stepping up, digging deep and surprising themselves.

This is now our fourth year running The Dungay Ditch, and each year it grows stronger, just like our runners.
Because at Dungay, we believe something simple but powerful: every child can be a runner. With high expectations, encouragement and the right support, our students don’t just participate, they thrive.
So if you’ve got a child who loves to run… they’ll feel right at home here.

To make the day even more meaningful, our school was a sea of orange as we celebrated Harmony Day. At Dungay, Harmony Day isn’t just something we acknowledge, it’s something we live. It’s about belonging. It’s about respect. It’s about every child feeling known, valued and connected.

Days like today remind us that our strength comes from our diversity and the way we support one another, on the track, in the classroom and beyond.

Small school. Big heart. Strong people.

Dungay Year 4, 5 & 6 Camp – Coffs Coast Adventure Centre 2026

After last year’s unforgettable Snow and Canberra adventure, our Dungay students packed their bags once again, this time heading south for an action-packed few days at the Coffs Coast Adventure Centre… and wow, did they deliver on adventure!

From the moment they arrived at camp after a quick and fun stop at the ‘Big Banana’, it was game on. Students threw themselves into every challenge, getting gloriously muddy on the commando course, rolling (and laughing non-stop) while zorbing down hills, and showing serious courage as they zipped high above the treetops. The Survivor-style challenges brought out teamwork, grit and a whole lot of competitive spirit!

At Dungay PS, we believe camps are where the magic really happens. It’s where friendships grow stronger, resilience is built, and students discover they’re capable of more than they ever imagined. And true to The Dungay Way, our students gave everything a go, supported each other, and made memories that will stick for years to come.

A huge thank you to the incredible team at Coffs Coast Adventure Centre for taking such great care of our Dungay crew, you made it an experience to remember!

We’re already looking forward to returning in 2029… but first, the big question, where to next in 2027?
