🌟 Toastmasters Dundas Meeting Recap | ā€œThe Final Countdown.ā€ 🌟

Our meeting #651 hit the ground running with our high-stakes theme. Between Linh’s perfectly timed Word of the Day (imminent) - leaving us with the choice to either prepare or panic - and Brigitte’s hilarious toast celebrating an upcoming long weekend free from being coerced into watching sports, the energy in the room was electric right from the start!

šŸ’¬ Table Topics Melainie took the reins as Table Topics Master, keeping everyone on their toes with a series of sharp, thought-provoking questions:
• Tom admitted that while most local residents might skip the games, he’ll definitely be tuned in since his team is actually doing well.
• Dianne tackled the complex topic of sports endorsement gender pay gaps, arguing passionately about court time and equal value in tennis.
• Flora (one of our wonderful visitors!) reminded us that life’s greatest victories aren't always athletic, sharing that her university graduation easily tops any sporting moment.

šŸŽ¤ Prepared Speeches Our three prepared speakers brought an incredible blend of humour, heart, and inspiration to the stage:
• Rommel had the room in stitches with a hilarious survival guide to cross-cultural marriage.
• Corinne delivered a deeply moving tribute to her late father, sharing how the small details of his life reflected his deep love.
• Brigitte took us on an inspiring journey through the world’s "Blue Zones," challenging our ideas about aging.

🧭 Evaluations & Feedback Our evaluation team, Doug, Dianne, and Tom provided sharp, constructive insights for our speakers, offering practical tips on using strategic pauses, leaning into humour, and structuring key points. To wrap up the session, Joyce delivered a fantastic General Evaluation.

Our members and visitors came together for a relaxed dinner, a chance to unwind, share stories, and strengthen the connections that make our club such a welcoming community. Thank you to everyone who joined us. We love seeing our community thrive both inside and outside the meeting room.

✨ Visitors are always welcome — come along, meet the team, and discover how Toastmasters can help you find your voice.

As a Speaker - how high is your aim?

This is going to upset some people…

In the 55 years I’ve been speaking to audiences I have been a member of Toastmasters, Rostrum, National Speakers, and The Speakers’ Institute. On top of this, I’ve attended evening college classes on Public Speaking in New Zealand and Australia and taught public speaking skills both at evening college and at my former place of work.

Why am I telling you all this?

I guess it’s because today, Toastmasters (the only one of these organizations in which I retain my membership) has, in my opinion, lost its way. To me, the enjoyment has gone out of partaking in its programs. I see members bogged down in administrating its online requirements – requirements the other previously organizations mentioned either do not have, or don’t have buried away in complexities that appear to boggle the minds of many.

This downside of Toastmasters came home to me as I looked at a photograph (attached) recently taken at a Speakers’ Institute gathering. Their members are not concerned with kudos, Pathway Levels, badges, and shields and all sorts of artificial ā€˜come-ons’ to measure progress. Their successes are measured in the actual presentations they are hired to deliver.

That said, Toastmasters is still one of the best ā€˜value for money’ Public Speaking and Leadership organizations in the world today. But Toastmaster membership has dropped drastically over the past few years and I lay this firmly at the feet of those who persist in making being a member more and more difficult with their ever-increasing website requirements at the expense of simple club level enjoyment.

āœļø Word of the Day: Bare / Bear / B**r / Bier
At our recent Dundas Toastmasters meeting, Joyce provided our members with a bit of fun with homophones - those tricky words that sound the same but carry very different meanings and spelling.

Our Word of the Day challenge featured a colourful mix:
bare – uncovered, plain, exposed
bear – the animal… or the act of carrying, supporting, or enduring
b**r – a classic beverage
bier – a stand for a coffin

Seeing these side‑by‑side sparked creativity, laughter, and some very inventive sentence‑building throughout the meeting. It was a great reminder of how rich, flexible, and occasionally mischievous the English language can be.

Toastmasters isn’t just about speaking - it’s about exploring words, sharpening clarity, and having fun while we learn. This Word of the Day board captured that perfectly. Thank you Joyce!
