✏️ Word of the Day: Bare / Bear / Beer / Bier
At our recent Dundas Toastmasters meeting, Joyce provided our members with a bit of fun with homophones - those tricky words that sound the same but carry very different meanings and spelling.

Our Word of the Day challenge featured a colourful mix:
bare – uncovered, plain, exposed
bear – the animal… or the act of carrying, supporting, or enduring
beer – a classic beverage
bier – a stand for a coffin

Seeing these side‑by‑side sparked creativity, laughter, and some very inventive sentence‑building throughout the meeting. It was a great reminder of how rich, flexible, and occasionally mischievous the English language can be.

Toastmasters isn’t just about speaking - it’s about exploring words, sharpening clarity, and having fun while we learn. This Word of the Day board captured that perfectly. Thank you Joyce!

💡Monthly Member Spotlight | Meet Melainie! 💡

Melainie joined Toastmasters in April 2017, after finally deciding to walk into a meeting she had been thinking about for months. She found a club that was easy to get to, committed to attending, loved the atmosphere, and nine years later she is still here and still loving it.

💛 What keeps her coming back
The people. Melainie loves the diversity of voices, perspectives, and life experiences in the club. Every meeting feels like a chance to hear new viewpoints and enjoy “second-hand adventures” she may never experience otherwise.

🌱 A challenge she overcame
Toastmasters arrived at the perfect time. After navigating a toxic work environment that had chipped away at her confidence, the club became a place where she could rebuild her self-belief, grow, and reconnect with her strengths.

📚 Favourite meeting role
Melainie’s top pick is the Book Review. She enjoys sharing books she has loved and hearing recommendations from other members, often discovering titles she may never have come across without someone mentioning them.

💬 Her advice for new members
“Don’t be afraid of messing up. Every member, even the most experienced, has stumbled at some point. You learn just as much from those moments as you do from a polished speech.”

Melainie, thank you for everything you bring to our club. Your warmth, curiosity, and enthusiasm make our meetings richer, and we truly enjoy having you as part of our Toastmasters family.
