🌱🪱 DELC Worm Farm Expansion!

Our original worm farm was overflowing, so we decided it was time to give our worms a little more space! We purchased a second worm farm to sit in the Djidi Djidi vegetable patch, making it easy for the children to access and feed the worms as part of our everyday gardening experiences.

The Yonga children helped prepare the new home, shredding cardboard, carefully transferring the worms and food scraps, and then adding a fresh layer of worm bedding. 🪱🌿

The new worm farm is now settled into the Djidi Djidi yard, and our worms are already getting comfortable, with little wrigglers starting to appear!

We love giving children hands-on opportunities to care for living things, reduce food waste and see how our scraps can help create something new for our garden.

🌿 Exploring Djilba in our local community 🌸

The Bindi Bindi children headed out for a nature walk, exploring the seasonal changes we can see during Djilba.

We discovered native plants, banksia seeds, bright red and yellow flowers, leaves and lots of interesting textures. The children noticed holes, patterns and different shapes and sizes as they investigated their surroundings. 🌱

We collected sticks and natural materials along the way, while some of our little adventurers challenged themselves to climb and explore the trees! 🌳

A wonderful opportunity to connect with nature, follow our curiosity and learn about the world around us. 💚

As we continue through Djilba, the Noongar season of growth and new life, our children have been exploring one of the many changes happening in nature around us.

Inspired by the birds that are busily building nests throughout our beautiful outdoor environment, the children gathered natural and recycled materials including leaves, bark and shredded paper to create their own cosy bird nests. 🪺🍃

At DELC, we are fortunate to be surrounded by birdlife, giving us endless opportunities to observe, wonder and learn from the world around us. By watching birds collect materials, build their nests and care for their young, children develop a deeper appreciation for nature, seasonal changes and the interconnectedness of living things.

Colour, Mix, Pour, Explore! 🌈🧪

Today our children became little scientists as they explored a colourful sensory invitation filled with coloured water, bicarb soda and vinegar.

Through pouring, stirring, mixing and experimenting, they discovered bubbling reactions while developing fine motor skills, coordination and early scientific thinking. There were plenty of smiles, curiosity and conversations as children made predictions, observed changes and explored cause and effect together.

🖤💛❤️ NAIDOC Week | Cooking with Native Flavours 🌿

As part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations, the children joined Deb to make damper, choosing from cheese, sultanas and native saltbush before carefully pinching and rolling their chosen ingredients into the dough.

While making damper, we also explored the rich food traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. For tens of thousands of years, First Nations Peoples have gathered native plants and harvested grains and seeds to create bush breads and seed cakes, with knowledge of Country and bush foods passed from generation to generation.

By incorporating native saltbush into our cooking, the children were introduced to one of Australia's traditional bush foods while learning about the enduring knowledge, culture and connection to Country of the world's oldest living continuous cultures.🌿

Discovering the Stories of Ochre 🤎

Through hands-on exploration, our toddlers have been learning about ochre and its significance in Aboriginal cultures. After discovering how ochre has traditionally been used for storytelling, art and ceremony, the children used rocks to crush chalk into a fine powder, representing the process of creating ochre.

By engaging their senses and curiosity, the children developed an appreciation for one of the many ways Aboriginal peoples have connected with Country, culture and creative expression for tens of thousands of years. Experiences like these help foster respect, wonder and a deeper understanding of Australia's rich First Nations cultures.

Connecting to Country Through Nature Weaving 🌿🖤💛❤️

As part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations, the children explored a nature weaving experience using sticks and wool in the colours of the Aboriginal Flag. Through wrapping, weaving and creating, they developed their fine motor skills while engaging in meaningful conversations about Country, connection and culture.

🌿🪲 Eco Action Insect Incursion 🪲🌿

We always look forward to welcoming Eco Action to our centre, and the children had an incredible time during the insect incursion experience!

The session sparked so much curiosity as the children explored a range of fascinating insects up close, asked thoughtful questions, and showed amazing care and respect for the living creatures. Experiences like this support a love of nature, build confidence, and encourage children to investigate the world around them in meaningful ways.

There were plenty of excited moments, lots of hands-on learning, and big smiles all round!

We are so grateful for these enriching experiences that bring learning to life in such an engaging way. 🌱✨
