Winter, did someone say "Winter?" 😱

Open water swimming is a big part of the stand up paddleboarding [SUP]lessons for our homeschooled kids, but not usually during the Winter months πŸ˜…

The cooler water can bring on cold water shock for some, but not for young Ena, nothing phases her. She maybe the youngest & the only girl in my group, but oh my, she really puts the boys to shame πŸ˜†

If you have kids who are home schooled and would be interested in joining us, why don't you drop an email to [email protected], PM or call 0458 164 138 to discuss your options.

I look forward to hearing from you πŸ’™

Do you know how to safely access and egress the water?

My homeschooled kids do, but sometimes it just takes a little reminder and assistance as to what best practice is, especially when the conditions are a little bit challenging for the younger kids.

In a group situation I always get the more experienced paddler out first so that they're on the water to assist anyone in need, prior to my getting out on my board, well done to my wing man "A", you're a star.

Following these safety pointers will assist anyone starting out paddleboarding -

βœ”οΈ Prepare at the water's edge β€” attach your leash securely, never get on the water without one

βœ”οΈ Carry the board into shallow water by the handles, keeping the fin clear of rocks and the bottom

βœ”οΈ Put the board side on into the water, with the fin in sufficiently deep water so it doesn't hit the bottom. A good guide is wading out to knee height water

βœ”οΈ Stand beside the centre of the board, place your paddle over the front of your board, use both hands to secure your movement & climb on with your knees either side of the carry handle

βœ”οΈ Continue with kneel paddling until you're clear of your launch area and at least in water 3ft deep before attempting to stand up

When returning to shore -

βœ”οΈ Paddle towards the shore, drop down to your knees for safety

βœ”οΈ Make sure the water is deep enough that the fin won't hit the bottom; you can use your paddle to check for depth

βœ”οΈ Once you've reached approximately knee deep again gradually ease yourself off the board to a standing position

βœ”οΈ Once you're safely standing in the water, release your board by lifting the side; don't try to lift from the centre handle as it will create suction and not lift your board

βœ”οΈ Carry your board out, keeping the fin clear of the bottom and place on the shore

These are just the basics, there's so much to learn about the simplest of tasks.

If you are interested in learning to stand up paddleboard why don't you get in touch by PM, emailing [email protected], or alternatively give me a call on 0458 164 138 to discuss your options.

I look forward to hearing from you πŸ’™

Stand up paddleboarding (SUP) is an exciting and challenging activity that can empower men through fitness, personal development and connection with others.

Participating in SUP is like attending a free gym; it provides an opportunity to build physical strength and endurance while also developing confidence, resilience and a strong sense of achievement.

SUP requires a combination of cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, balance, coordination and mental focus. As paddlers progress, they can set personal goals, improve technique and challenge themselves to paddle further, develop greater stability or improve their overall fitness. This creates a positive environment where success is measured by individual progress and personal achievement.

My new client, BJ, is an ex-runner who was accustomed to setting goals and challenging himself. BJ immediately recognised the benefits of SUP as a powerful, low-impact activity that not only improves physical fitness but also fosters greater self-belief, independence, motivation, personal achievement and overall wellbeing.

Having never stepped onto a paddleboard before, BJ had a few wobbles, admitted it was harder than he thought, but very quickly took to the water with remarkable ease, paddling confidently as though he had been doing it for much longer.

A structured SUP fitness program is achievable for any age or gender. Sessions can include paddling technique, endurance training, strength and conditioning, balance exercises, recovery sessions and so much more.

SUP fitness training is progressive & tailored to each participant's fitness level and experience. Setting achievable short-term goals, such as improving stroke technique or completing a longer distance, can help participants recognise their progress and remain motivated.

Learning to manage challenges such as fatigue, changing water conditions and unfamiliar situations can build resilience and self-confidence that can also be applied to other areas of life.

If you are interested in SUP fitness then why don’t you get in touch? PM, Email [email protected] or alternatively give me a call on 0458 164 138 to discuss your options.

Aren't you curious to know if Fitstop Biloela is the place for you?

If you're wondering what instructor led, functional training is all about then why don't you come down on Saturday and take a squiz for yourself?

You will not be disappointed πŸ˜ƒ

Postponing a session on the grounds of safety is always a difficult call to make, I dislike disappointment, especially for the kids 😞

The forecast was predicted to be strong gusty wind and in excess of my teaching remit of 12 knots. The Dam conditions looked okay in principle but the gusts were in excess of 20 knots and my decision to postpone was definitely the right one πŸ‘Œ

In the video, I am actually being blown backwards, very unnerving, whilst feathering the paddle trying to stay stationary πŸ™ˆ

Wind can be your ally and adversary when you’re out on the water, so it is important to understand weather forecasting prior to heading out on your stand up paddleboard [SUP] adventure.

Typically, 12 knots (approx. 22kph or 13.8mph) is going to challenge for an inexperienced or young paddler; 12 knots is a guiding safety principle provided by ASI Academy of Surfing Instructors and the remit Blue Therapy SUP operates.

There were moments of calm, but not enough for my homeschooled kids to hit the water. Continuing with a lesson would have caused frustration, due to lack of skill and their physical strength to cope. If the kids were to have fallen into the water they'd have been pretty cold due to today's low temperatures. All would have equated to an unpleasant session and one that could put children off from returning.

Lets hope next weeks weather is a lot kinder πŸ™

Callide Dam offers a few sheltered spots but where you are paddling could be more or less affected by the wind, there's so much to learn & understand.

If you are interested in understanding more about the wind and how to read the forecast, please do not hesitate to contact me and book a paddle session where you will learn & understand so much more.

You can contact me via email on [email protected], drop me a PM or alternatively call me on 0458164138 to discuss your options.

I look forward to hearing from you πŸ’™

Stand up paddleboarding (SUP) is a healthy, fun and energetic sport that instils confidence and a love for water. SUP is an easy sport to learn at a young age as they are more agile & less afraid to fall in the water; there are plenty of skills to master to keep your kids engaged for as long as they want. It’s amazing to see young children paddle by themselves for the first time, they find a new independence, a sense of freedom and grow from strength to strength.

It takes time and encouragement to build up strength and stamina for children to paddle distances or for any length of time; this is something we work on, each week, during the boys PE lesson, especially during the cooler months when the water is a bit cool for other activities.

The boys are amazing due to regular attendance & growing from strength to strength. They occasionally need reminding about paddle technique & foot positioning but each session this gets less.

This week we worked on strength & stamina, paddling non stop for 2.5km into the wind. After an explore of the quarry, we carried out a litter pick before heading back. The return paddle was 3km and the boys were to again, paddle non-stop. "H" smashed this and was gone, always in my sight but showed us how good he really is πŸ‘Œ

"A" on the other hand needed a little more encouraging, he was apparently a bit tired πŸ€” being tired is never a problem, there's always a tow back from the instructor, however, a rest has to be earned. "A" had to paddle another 500mtrs before he could have his rest. I towed him for 1km, then asked him to paddle the last 500mtrs. "A" jumped up and said "sure, I feel like a new man after that lie down", he's a card πŸ˜‚

If you have a child / children who can swim & would be interested in coming along for a SUP lesson or two please get in touch. We have regular Tuesday mornings for homeschooled kids and Sunday mornings for Kids SUP Club. It would be great to have more youngsters involved in this sport πŸ™

You can contact me via email [email protected], send a PM or alternatively you can call 0458 164 138 to discuss more options.

I look forward to hearing from you πŸ’™
