Awabakal Environmental Education Centre, is a NSW Department of Education school. All programs support NSW curriculum.

Excursion opportunites are provided for students from Kindergarten to Year 12. We have 2 campuses:
Dudley Campus and the Wetlands Campus Awabakal Environmental Education Centre, is a NSW Department of Education school which provides environmental and sustainability education for students and teachers in Newcastle and the Hunter Region. Located at Dudley, the adjacent Awabakal Nature Reserve provid

es excellent field work opportunities to compare habitats and assess human impacts. This coastal area was historically used by the Awabakal Aboriginal people on a seasonal basis. All programs at Awabakal Environmental Education Centre reflect the NSW curriculum outcomes and the Department Environmental Education Policy for Schools requirements. Excursions and fieldwork are conducted at a range of locations including Awabakal Nature Reserve, Glenrock State Conservation Area, Merewether Beach and Redhead Beach. Staff are Department of Education teachers with specialisation in environmental education.

It was fantastic to have students from West Wallsend High School participate in fieldwork at Stockton Beach over 2 days last week. This program has been undergoing adjustments and improvements for the introduction of new syllabus. Students now walk to the break wall and have a great vantage point to discuss the interruption to coastal processes at this location.

At Awabakal EEC we feel like it is Science Week every week. This Science Week 2026, the theme is Seeds of Science: nurturing science for all. We love to see students investigating the environment, fostering their curiosity and sharing their discoveries to benefit the community. Happy Science Week!

We were thrilled to welcome the Opportunity Classes from Jewells Primary School and Biraban Public School for a fieldwork excursion at Redhead Beach. Students explored the area, gathered and analysed data, and developed solutions addressing environmental challenges both locally and globally.

We are passionate about taking learning beyond the classroom through engaging fieldwork excursions in amazing natural environments, helping students connect with the world around them.

This year’s theme, Inspiring Excellence, is reflected every day in the dedication of our staff. Whether it’s delivering our extensive excursion programs, nurturing students through our Kitchen Gardens Program, leading HPGE excursions, supporting learning in partnership with the John Hunter Hospital School, coordinating our statewide Wet and Wild Research Competition, or through the outstanding work of our SASS staff behind the scenes, every member of our team plays a vital role in helping our visiting students thrive.

One of our visiting Year 11 Biology students made an exciting discovery during their fieldwork excursion. They found a caddisfly larva that had built its protective "home" inside a gum nut. Caddisfly larvae are well known for their fascinating behaviour—using natural materials to construct cases for shelter. This caddisfly larvae who chose a gum nut as its case, shows just how creative and resourceful nature can be!

The recent rain has brought out many Red Triangle Slugs. We spotted these in Awabakal Nature Reserve. Happy World Environment Day 2026!

Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For our Future.
This years theme is about acknowledging the Earth's warning signs and a call to all to take action. Positive change is already happening in communities across the world, we can all contribute this and accelerate the transition to a sustainable future.

This long weekend take the time to get out into nature or make a positive change for the environment.

A huge thank you to Erina High School for trialling our new Stage 5 Science program, Materials and Environmental Sustainability. Students conducted a litter survey to determine the quantity and type of polymers, assessed water quality and stormwater pollution, determined the level of microplastic pollution and discussed how Aboriginal people used resources for a wide range of purposes. We were excited to see the program in action. Thanks Erina High School!
