What a gift it is to give your child the opportunities to play independently, this allows children to make their own choices about play objects, how to manipulate them, how to problem solve and most importantly to experience joy and satisfaction in their own play without needing to be entertained by a parent 💫 Think of the joy you could also feel as you sit back and observe your baby at play, we have been discussing in class the strategies you could use at home to encourage independent play … and maybe the opportunity for a quiet cupola while you sit back and watch 💫

When your passion becomes your business 💫
This year I took a leap of faith and opened A Place for Play parent and infant classes, and it’s been wonderful. Amongst restrictions on families and lockdown I have run several classes with babies from 3 months of age (and still attending), I have worked with families in small groups and during 1:1 consultation and hosted professional development tours for childcare centres in Sydney 💫
Thank you for supporting my business and to my families and babies what a joy it is each week to observe play and learning in a simple setting and hear stories of how you are implementing RIE inspired practices into your parenting 💫
All set up here for the last class this year, Merry Christmas 🎄

🎄Christmas 🎄it’s so magical experiencing Christmas through the eyes of a child. All too often I’ve seen product driven Christmas activities where the children follow instructions from adults without any choice let alone opportunity to explore their own ideas and creativity.
Hope you enjoy these simple Christmas play ideas, I’ve added some magical Christmas touches to familiar play items using textured trees, recycled ribbon holders, boxes and shatter proof ornaments.
Let them play uninterrupted and add elements of each child and families traditions and beliefs to make it meaningful and enjoy the magic 🎄

Swipe for before and after play scenes ~ it might look like a mess but the residue of play tells us so much about children’s learning through exploration and discovery 💫 there’s evidence of collecting, sorting, categorising, choices and play preferences 💫 the mess we see is learning in progress, try not to tidy it up too quickly, let your little ones resume their play to repeat, revisit and extend their learning.

Simple play objects means busy babies, adding some baskets, bowls and containers to our play space has many learning benefits 💫 encourages exploration and agency, provides opportunities for transporting~ moving objects from 1 space to another, endless possibilities as there is no one way to use these objects ~ this means your baby is doing all the thinking, problem solving and decision making 💫 such important life skills practiced repeatedly in the early years through play 💫

During classes parents find a space to sit on the floor near their child as this sends an important message ‘this is where I’ll be’ the children then have the choice of when to move away and when they need to come back for refuelling ~ a cuddle, reassurance and to have their emotional cups filled so they feel ready to explore independently again.

What a joy to have classes resume and observe these babies discover through play 💫 we don’t have to teach babies how to play, they have a natural curiosity about the world around them and the most meaningful and authentic learning happens during the everyday 💫 we learn so much from babies through observing which objects they choose to play with and how they play with them 💫 In the wise words of Magda Ge**er ‘for play’s sake’

Risky play can feel scary for parents, it can be hard to let go of control and allow your child to play freely, after all it is our job to protect our little ones in any way we can 💫 Maybe it’s easier to think of it as adventurous play 💫 At A Place for Play classes we talk about how to support risky play and how to create safe yet interesting spaces at home to help children learn how to assess a risk, build resilience and develop confidence in their world💫

Toddler play can be busy, full of curiosity and discovery 💫 classes for toddlers focus on choices, playing freely, learning together with and from other toddlers 💫 Parents tell me their toddlers are COVID babies and have missed opportunities for socialising with other toddlers 💫 Parent and toddler classes are a great way for your toddler to play with others with the security of knowing you are right there when they need you 💫 limited spaces now available for this year 💫
