Today our Year 1 students were so excited to use their brand new whisper phones during reading time!
At first glance they might look like simple pieces of plastic, but they are actually a fantastic literacy tool. Whisper phones allow children to quietly hear their own voice more clearly as they read. This extra auditory feedback helps many beginning readers notice when something doesnβt sound quite right, improve their fluency, and build confidence as they practise.
As children hear themselves reading, they become more aware of sounds in words, expression, and punctuation. It also encourages them to self-correct rather than relying on the teacher to point out every mistake.
One of the best things about whisper phones is that every child can read aloud at the same time without disturbing others. This means more reading practice, more confidence, and more opportunities to develop strong reading habits.
Learning to read takes lots of practice, and itβs wonderful to have another engaging tool that makes reading fun while supporting literacy development.
We had lots of smiles, growing confidence, and some wonderful reading happening in our classroom today!

Burrabadine staff enjoyed a wonderful PD week, focusing on being a teaching and learning community filled with joy. We participated in daily reflections with historian Dr Paul Roe and especially enjoyed sharing brekky together and hearing from Paul and Riverbank Frank at the Rotunda as they shared the inspring story of civil rights activist Bill Ferguson.
We look forward to joyfully welcoming students back for term 3 on Monday.
