They enable you to practice a scale or part of a song and immediately hear back the audio and then record again.

There is 'echo' for Android devices and 'repeat recorder audio practice app ' for iOS

They can keep you in the flow of practicing, hearing back and applying any corrections or improvements with minimal phone distractions.

Practice Session Planning

One of the pitfalls many singers fall into is practising without a clear plan or purpose. Sure you very likely practice with the purpose of getting better but ‘getting better’ is comprised of lots of smaller goals typically.

Try the following-

Pre plan what you will work on for your next practice session.

Write it down in some kind of notebook/planner- Make sure you cover weaker technical areas early in the practice time after you have sufficiently warmed up.

Vocal Diary Tip
Recently I've been using this strategy and finding it extremely useful for helping my vocal development and for the development for students.

It’s simple. Create a vocal diary.

Now before some of you become disappointed and don't even try it hear me out and it will make sense why I suggest this. It's not to log practice time or similar etc

The kind of journalling I talk about is this :

Write down vocal discoveries you have made while practising or performing good or bad!
You will find some days your mind is clear and focused and some vocal concepts just click! That is the day to write them down as you understand them so you can access it on other days. On the days things are not clicking you can write down if you feel tensions in your body etc

Eventually it will become a mini book of vocal wisdom you have gained through experience, mistakes and successes.

What you will write and the discoveries you will be making will most likely differ but the regular act of writing it down for referencing later can only help!

I am very passionate about constant development so I am reading books and articles from my mentors so I do this daily and write my thoughts about application and use of these in my journal including how it connects to other concepts I understand.

I also take notes on lessons I have had with my teacher.

Here are 3 advantages to doing this:

1. By writing down ideas you are learning in a central place you can easily revisit them later. Sometimes revisiting things you first learnt to deepen them can help vocal breathroughs.

2. It is a great way to increase your discipline as a singer mastering their voice instrument

3. You can use the discoveries to plan your next practice session.

4. If you desire to teach voice it will become a great resource to look into to help others.

To journal you can use a notepad or some kind of app.

An easy way to do this if you don't want to use pen and paper is to use the Google Keep Notes App. It means you can access it from any laptop/phone or desktop computer. This is what I use to maximise access between my devices.

Commit to writing in it everyday after you practice!

You will be amazed over time the wisdom you can gain from it while you start to understand and apply solid vocal concepts.

Combining these two ideas together with careful attention to practising well will help you get the most out of your practice times!

Much of my work as a teacher is helping students build a solid vocal technique.
From there i tell them when they are on stage to just sing and express the song!

The idea is when you develop technique carefully in the practice room it naturally (over time) will be there on stage too.

But the focus on stage is on performance!

Glad to be a part of this! It was fun deciphering harmony parts to teach the teens.

Great group of talented kids. I am looking forward to more ahead with the end of year musical (High school musical 2 ) which will be a nice challenge for singers!

🎭 Curtain Call 2026 🎭

Last night was our very first Nova Youth Theatre showcase… and honestly, what this group achieved in just FOUR months is something truly special.

A brand new program. New faces. Different age groups. Students who had never worked together before. Families putting their trust in us from day one. And somehow, in such a short amount of time, these kids came together as a TEAM and delivered a showcase we could not be prouder of.

Was it perfect? No. We had hiccups, lessons learnt, stressful moments behind the scenes and plenty of things we’ll continue improving as we grow. But for a first-year program? The level of professionalism, commitment, teamwork and talent shown on that stage tonight was incredible.
For a first showcase, the standard these students set tonight was exceptional the kind of chemistry, passion and polish that takes some programs years to build.

And the exciting part? We are only just getting started.

Every challenge this season threw at us only made us stronger as a crew, stronger as a program and more determined to create something unforgettable for these kids. I have absolutely no doubt that our Curtain Call showcases will continue to grow and thrive every single year….

And best believe… we are already planning more BIG things for 2026. We cannot wait to bring our musical to the stage and close out the 2026 theatre season with an extraordinary bang.

To every single person who supported our Youth Theatre program over these last four months thank you. Seeing the audience full of love, encouragement and support meant more than you know. And to those who stayed back after the show to congratulate the students and celebrate their efforts… thank you for making them feel seen and valued.

Because at the end of the day, that is what this is all about.

No matter what happens behind the scenes, our priority will always be making sure these young performers are thriving, growing in confidence, nurturing their talent and being given opportunities to chase their dreams wherever those dreams may take them.

We are endlessly grateful for the amazing team beside us,helping every step of the way, and for the people already offering their support for the future of this program. I truly couldn’t do it without you all.

And to our students… wow.
Watching so many of you finally get a chance to step into the spotlight, take on bigger roles, back yourselves and shine on stage was emotional to watch. You should all be so proud of yourselves because we certainly are.

Nova Youth Theatre is only at the beginning of its story, but I am so proud of what we are building together.

We’re only scratching the surface of what this program is capable of… and the future is looking pretty incredible. ✨

A good teacher or mentor is like gold in this world! That’s something I value and try to embody because of the difference I know it can make!

My confidence in reaching my ultimate dream of being in musical theatre was knocked hard recently. I’m so glad that, even though I was down, I was not out, when opportunity knocked… and I knew exactly who to turn to!

Luke Bernard Kent at Kent Vocal Studio has been my coach for a very long time now. I’ve traded training spots with one of my children but I can still rely on him for advice across so many realms.

I booked a session with him yesterday for an upcoming audition, and he was so incredibly helpful, so in tune with my voice and how to help with my struggles with reading and following music. He’s worth every penny (and he doesn’t charge much at all)!!! 💕💕💕

I am teaching a beginner songwriting course online (using zoom video software) for Sydney community college starting on Tuesday 6.30pm on the 12th of may.

I have taught singers for over 14 years but before that I worked in amateur and professional situations playing various instruments (guitar, bass, drums, keyboard ,saxophone and trombone)

With my singer/songwriter wife i have been a part of several projects writing songs for briefs.

I have been writing music for over 30 years with a strong focus on chord progressions and melody but I also have written various songs with lyrics.
