In Kenya, where plastic pollution and housing shortages collide, one woman dared to bridge both crises. Nzambi Matee, a materials-engineer turned eco-entrepreneur, founded Gjenge Makers in Nairobi when she realised plastic waste could become a building resource instead of a burden. Using discarded plastics mixed with sand, her team manufactures paving bricks that are more durable, lighter and cheaper than traditional concrete blocks. In fact, her materials are reported to be up to seven times stronger than concrete.

This innovation merges powerful themes: sustainable construction, circular economy, plastic waste recycling, and affordable housing solutions—all of which draw high attention from advertisers and audience segments looking at environment tech, infrastructure, green jobs and social impact.
Her company recycles hundreds of kilograms of plastic every day, creating jobs and reducing landfill strain. By turning waste into bricks used in pathways, driveways and even building blocks, Matee demonstrates how green-tech startups in Africa are stepping into global markets and solving local problems at the same time.
