🌿 Koolangas Kedala – Children’s Day

Today, we continued our celebrations with Koolangas Kedala (Children’s Day), welcoming students from East Wanneroo Primary School to Dianella Secondary College for a day of cultural learning, connection and togetherness.

Our visitors took part in a range of activities led by our own students, including cultural dances led by our Warangka Dandjoo students. The day was filled with opportunities to learn from one another, build connections and celebrate culture together.

Of course, no great school event is complete without a sausage sizzle! 🌭

A huge thank you to East Wanneroo Primary School for joining us and making the day such a positive experience. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to share their knowledge, learn from each other and strengthen connections between our schools.

🌿 Continuing our journey in Cultural Responsiveness

We’re proud to share that Dianella Secondary College has once again been named a finalist in the 2026 WA Education Awards for Excellence in Cultural Responsiveness.

Following our finalist recognition in 2025, this recognition reflects our continued commitment to embedding Aboriginal perspectives, knowledge and culture across our College.

Over the past year, we have continued to build on this work through initiatives including Maladjiny Dandjoo (Growing Together) Community Garden, our Aboriginal Education initiatives, cultural learning opportunities and partnerships with Elders and community organisations.

Cultural responsiveness is an ongoing journey of listening, learning, reflecting and growing together — and we’re proud of the work our students, staff and partners continue to do.

🌿 NAIDOC Week at Dianella Secondary College

What a huge week of learning, culture and connection as we celebrate NAIDOC Week at Dianella Secondary College!

We kicked off the week with Ochre Art lessons and damper baking, giving students the opportunity to learn through hands-on experiences and explore the significance of traditional practices.

Outside the classroom, students took part in Kaali Koordadjiny (boomerang throwing) and Marn-grook (a traditional ball game), while also building bird homes and learning about the unique seasons of Country and how they shape life, culture and knowledge.

Today, Preston Culbong from the spoke with our students about water sourcing, treatment and conservation. Preston also shared his knowledge of how our unique seasons have shaped Aboriginal culture, ritual and tradition, providing students with an opportunity to connect environmental knowledge with culture and Country.

Stay tuned, as we still have many more excellent things to share on our connection to culture at Dianella Secondary College.

🚀 From the classroom to space: Meet Binar-5!

What began 2 years ago as a Year 8 STEM challenge has now reached an incredible milestone for our Dianella Secondary College students.

Our STEM Academy students have been part of the Binar Space WA Student Payload Development Program, working alongside scientists and engineers from Curtin University’s Binar Space Program and Space Science and Technology Centre to design, build and program a payload destined for space.

Last year, the students proudly handed over their completed payload at Curtin University, marking the culmination of an 18-month journey of problem-solving, coding, construction and collaboration. Their payload is now part of Binar-5, one of three CubeSats heading to Japan in less than two weeks.

Binar-5 carries eight payloads designed and programmed by Western Australian high-school students, including sensors, cameras and other technology. Fitting everything into a tiny 1U spacecraft has presented some very real engineering challenges — with mass, power, wiring, sensors, cameras and antennas all competing for space!

For our students, the most exciting part is knowing that something they designed and programmed in the classroom is now part of an actual spacecraft, ready to travel to the International Space Station and into low Earth orbit.

From their first mission concepts to construction, coding and the final handover, this has been an incredible journey spanning several years.
Their work is going to space. Literally.
