I read this beautiful quote. I'm not sure who wrote it, but very true & couldn't have said it better myself.

“If I had my child to raise all over again, I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later. I’d finger-paint more, and point the finger less. I would do less correcting and more connecting. I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes. I’d take more hikes and fly more kites. I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play. I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars. I’d do more hugging and less tugging.”

Spend the rest of your life with no regrets & no excuses. Be the best person you can be.

"Why yelling at your children falls on deaf ears"
Tip of the day - Tip 10 of 10

Let go of stress, learn to live deliberate intention. Stick with what is real rather than imagined. Discover how to use visualisations, affirmations and forward planning. Decide on a mantra to use when you feel under pressure that will return you to your plan when you find yourself beginning a meltdown. For example you could say: "I have everything within me to cope calmly with the situation".

"Why yelling at your children falls on deaf ears"
Today's Tip - Tip 7 of 10

- Avoid power struggles or power over a child because no one wins with this method. Instead of getting the results you want you will be building deep and destructive behaviours that could lead to abuse of either yourself or your child.

One way to help defuse the power struggle is to have a family meeting each week, have everyone bring to the table a concern, avoidance strategy, a family goal and perhaps an activity that each might like to do. This enables the family to work more effectively as a team rather than frustrated and isolated individuals.

"Why yelling at your children falls on deaf ears"
Today's Tip - Tip 6 of 10

- Begin to see the situation from the bigger picture - take yourself out of the particular tense situation that caused the yelling in the first instance and ask what can be done prior to avoid the rush, the disorganisation, the squeeze on everyone that leads to the melt down. Ultimately, yelling at your kids or any one for that matter, says more about the personal yelling and what's going on internally for them than quite possibly the behaviour that triggered the outburst. A coach can help gain clarity here.

"Why Yelling at your children falls on deaf ears"
Today's Tip - Tip No.5 of 10

- Confront your ghosts from the past. Look rationally with adult eyes at your fears and left over emotional baggage from how you were parented. If that was not an issue for you, ignore this. If it was an issue then decide to more forward. This is not an attack on your parents but things have changed. Your parents raised you with the resources they had at the time. The world raises children differently now.

"Why yelling at your kids falls on deaf ears".
Today's Tip - No.4 of 10

Discover what your body is telling you. Keep a chart of your emotions for 21 days. You might be surprised what you discover, there may be a recurring pattern or behaviour that was out of your awareness. You can do this for your child too. Then decide what you need to do to either maintain positive emotions or reduce negative ones. Recognise the warning signs. Emotions cause tightness in your chest, heaviness and slow movements, you could get shaky or experience negative gut feelings. Listen to the words coming out of your mouth, your tone and the volume of your voice.

Notice what you see when you lose it - what do you observe in your child, what emotion is mirrored back to you. How does yelling expand tension or allow anger in. Get help from a coach to see, hear and feel what is going on with you and your child, as you both deserve to have a healthier and happy life.

Have you ever noticed that yelling at your kids falls on deaf ears. If you are a yeller you might already have discovered that it really doesn't get the desired outcome or co-operation from your kids.

I have a 10 step strategy to help you take back your self control as well as providing practical resources allowing you and your family to live together without driving each other crazy.

Here are a couple of tips to begin with, give them a go. Each day I will post a new and useful tip until all 10 are revealed. Let's start with:

- Educate yourself by discovering more about yourself, build resources and strengthen your capacity for alternative ways of managing children's behaviour. This includes using a coach/mentor for getting support for yourself.

- Delete drama from your life, this only sucks your time, energy and emotional stability. Learn new positive strategies. When your about to blow you stack, check yourself with "Think-Stop-Do" to redirect and contain your feelings so you respond differently. Whilst your perfecting the "Think-Stop-Do" strategy, there is always the count to 10 and walk away from the situation, also helps.

It's not just the yelling that's the problem, we often lose our ability to rationalise and communicate and our mouth often lets lose with venomous words that are said in the heat of the moment. Children have wonderful memories, however they don't have the maturity or capacity to understand what you have said was not a true reflection of how you actually feel.
Be careful with what you say, this can change and reshape your child's behaviour in years to come.
