Rosie is finally getting a new home .

Just back from China.
I have just been notified that I have building approval to double the size the Crystal World building after 6 years of fighting Casey Council. I have also been planning to create a world class international mineral, fossil show in Melbourne for a few years now , so here goes.
I’m committing $100,000 to make it happen, who wants to join me in exhibiting and or also making it happen?
It’s not about making money but rather a making a legacy for future collectors and dealers under one roof .

From rough rock to finished specimen.

We've just taken delivery of over a tonne of Chrysocolla on Malachite from the Republic of the Congo, and we're only just getting started.

This video follows one piece through the process — selecting it in the rough, cutting, grinding and polishing it, and finally seeing what was hiding inside.

Just one example of the material we're working through.

One piece down. Hundreds more to go.

Look a little closer at these Victorian selenite specimens.

We dug these specimens ourselves near Swan Hill in Victoria, then brought them back to Crystal World to clean, dry and prepare them.

What caught our attention was the variety of crystal growth within the pieces. Fine, delicate crystals grow alongside larger, more substantial formations — a reminder that the conditions around a growing crystal can change considerably over time.

Selenite is a variety of gypsum, and it can form in a remarkable range of shapes and textures.

These are just a few of the pieces we've been working through. There are plenty more waiting their turn in the workshop.

Not all crystals grow the same way.
These selenite specimens were personally dug out of the ground by our team near Swan Hill in Victoria, and we're currently cleaning, drying and preparing them.
What's particularly interesting is the variety of crystal growth within the pieces. Fine, needle-like crystals sit alongside larger, more substantial formations, showing how the conditions around a growing crystal can change over time.
Selenite is a variety of gypsum, and it can form in some remarkably different shapes and textures.
These are a few pieces of Victorian material we collected ourselves — quite literally from the ground to the workshop.
And yes, there are quite a few more of them still waiting to be cleaned up.

Our mining work takes us into some of Australia’s most remote landscapes, where we regularly inspect and explore mining leases that have been part of our geological work for decades.

One of our most remote leases is in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia, where simply reaching the site can be an adventure. Rough tracks and sharp country make the journey challenging, with punctured tyres a constant risk!

The lease contains a fascinating range of minerals, including iolite and corundum, with even tiny rubies found among the material.

With more than 35 mining leases and exploration tenements, our ongoing fieldwork continues to connect us with some of Australia’s most remote and geologically interesting regions.

Crystal World founder Tom Kapitany is currently in Shanghai after being invited to judge the 2026 Global Natural History Day, an international science education program encouraging young students to explore and communicate their knowledge of the natural world.

Held at Shanghai University, the event brings together students from across China, with more than 1,000 students taking part. Tom and the other judges assessed science performances, exhibitions and student presentations based around this year’s theme, “Past, Present and Future.” Judges questioned students about their chosen subjects, testing both their scientific knowledge and their ability to communicate their research in English. Tom has supported the program as a volunteer for many years and also assists with its fundraising efforts.

The trip has taken an unexpected turn, however, with Typhoon Dolphin bringing severe weather and major transport disruptions to Shanghai. Flights and trains have been cancelled, and the planned student medal ceremony was called off.

Despite the disruption, Tom has enjoyed being part of the judging and seeing the enthusiasm and knowledge of the students taking part.

Who Wore It Best? — Tom’s Akubra Hat Edition 🤠
We found Tom’s Akubra and, naturally, decided to see who could pull it off.
The competition includes amethyst caves, amethyst spheres, dinosaur replicas, actual fossils, sculptures... and several of the dogs who live on the property.
Some have the head for it.
Some have the attitude.
Some are simply confused.

Not every day at Crystal World is spent behind the counter.
Some days we're unpacking new finds, preparing specimens in the workshop, photographing new arrivals, tidying displays... and supervising the dogs while they supervise the ducks and geese... who, in turn, supervise absolutely nothing.
Here's a little glimpse behind the scenes of a fairly normal day around the place.
There's always something happening—even if visitors don't always get to see it.
