As part of the Indigenous Literacy Day activities at Holy Rosary School in Derby, the students from years two to six had the privilege of meeting author Edith Wright. Born in Broome and from Bardi descent, Edith wrote the wonderful story Charlie's Swim about when World War II came to Broome.

The book targets readers aged 9 to 12 and recounts the true story of Wright’s uncle, Charlie D’Antoine, a Bardi man who demonstrated extraordinary bravery during the Japanese air raid on Broome on 3 March 1942. During the attack, which killed at least 88 civilians and military personnel, Charlie jumped from a flying boat into shark-infested waters filled with gunfire and burning wreckage to rescue a woman and her child. His heroic actions earned him a Certificate of Merit from the Royal Humane Society of Australasia and four bravery medals from the Dutch government in 1944, though it took 80 years for the Australian government to formally recognise his valour.

The story also brought history alive for the students of Holy Rosary as many have seen the commemorative artwork at Town Beach in Broome. Another special connection being that Charlie's decedents attend Holy Rosary School, with a special connection to the Morrison family. Former Aboriginal Teacher Assistant, Kylie Morrison, joined Edith to read Charlie's story to the students, along with sharing family connections.

A big thank you to Miss Lesley for organising this amazing activity.

Thank you so much Miss Kylie and Edith for providing this awesome experience.

Last week, our Year 3–6 students headed to Broome for an exciting day at the STEM Festival, run by The Kids Research Institute Australia! πŸ§ͺ

Our students jumped into hands-on STEM experiences, exploring everything from antibodies and viruses to robotics, engineering and environmental challenges. They even had the chance to create their own viruses and put their problem-solving skills to the test! πŸ§¬πŸ€–πŸŒ±

After a big day of learning, experimenting and discovering, we finished off with some fun and games at the park. πŸŒ΄β˜€οΈ

What an amazing day of STEM, curiosity and fun! We had so much fun learning, creating and exploring! πŸ’‘πŸ”¬πŸš€
