Giant Steps Tasmania

Giant Steps Tasmania is a not for profit, independent, specialist school and therapy centre for children on the autism spectrum.

Giant Steps, Tasmania is a not for profit, independent, specialist school and therapy centre for children living with a diagnosis of autism. We cater for students from Prep until Grade 12.. Our school is the only specialised school for Autism in Tasmania and in fact was one of the first of its kind to be established in Australia. The school is governed by members of a Board. was established in 1995 by a group of dedicated parents and local community supporters who were committed to ensuring focused and specialised education to suit the individualised needs of children with Autism Spectrum Challenges. Fifteen students were enrolled in the very first intake in 1995. Currently, we have 47 students accessing programs on either a full time or part time basis each week. A number of students are dual enrolled with their local school and access Giant Steps Programs two to three days each week. We also have a group of students who attend on a full time basis. The school is located at 35 West Church Street in the small rural community of Deloraine. The town is a leisurely drive of approximately thirty five minutes from the cities of Devonport or Launceston

Currently there is a dedicated staff of five teachers, an Occupational Therapist and over thirty teacher assistants who support students with their Giant Steps programs. Our programs seek:
• to assist students reach their developmental and accademic potential;
• to foster authentic connections with others;
• to guide students towards achieving optimum independence. Our programs have been designed for students to continually build upon identified goals with intensive assistance. Students will transition to, and between programs at a rate appropriate to their individual progress. Giant Steps owns and operates three buses which are used to transport students and clients to and from Giant Steps both from Launceston and Devonport on a daily basis.

One of the ways we are celebrating National Reconciliation Week at Giant Steps is with a whole school art project. This fabulous piece is now on display at the entrance to our school.

Classroom staff have just completed two intensive days of Read Write Inc training with Hayley from Ruth Miskin Training Australia. We can’t wait to start implementing this evidence-based, high-impact literacy program this term!

It may be school holidays, but it has been all action with our building work this week, with the slab for our new building going down yesterday. We can’t wait to see the progress of our two new classrooms being built.

Wednesday at Giant Steps is Coffee Club Day! Our Blue Room students have their own enterprise running Coffee Club for the staff. They manage the inventory, take orders and payments, and coordinate making all drinks to correspond with staff break times! It's such a successful program and staff love it. How good does this mocha look?! ☕️🤩

Today has been an egg-citing day as students have participated in an Easter Egg hunt organised by the Parents Group. We are very grateful to the Parents Group for organising such a fun event for our students today!
We hope everyone has a fabulous Easter celebration over the extra long weekend. We look forward to welcoming our students back to school on Wednesday.

Harmony Week is a celebration to recognise cultural diversity, inclusion and respect for all. Today we had a fantastic celebration day for Harmony Week with a variety of activities across the school.

It was a fabulous day today for the last day of school for our students. We hosted our end of year talent show and presentations at the Little Theatre in Deloraine, followed by a BBQ at school hosted by our Parents Group. We held our first Giant Steps Lego Competition today and it was a roaring success! The students have been hard at work for weeks working on their creations. We were so impressed by the creativity and perseverance our students showed as they worked on their models. Kimberly had a very tough job judging the models! Several students were present during the presentation to explain their work to Kimberly, and she was blown away by their efforts. We will definitely be making this an annual event! Well done everyone who took part and congratulations on your achievements! You should all be proud 👏

We have had a fabulous day for Superhero Day today! Superhero Day is an annual tradition at Giant Steps to remember our dear friend and former student Seb, who sadly passed away.
