The Land Does Not Read the Calendar — Part 3
The Calendar Came From Watching

Calendars can hold a relationship with the place where they are used.

Changes in light, rain, plants, animals and water can become ways of recognising the turning year. Publicly shared Indigenous seasonal calendars offer examples of knowledge that is specific to particular peoples and Country.

For Earthcraft, the invitation is to put observation beside our calendar.

What is changing in the place where you live?

What returns? What arrives earlier or later? Which signs do you recognise because you have watched them before?

Time can be counted, and it can also be witnessed.

Start with one place you can return to. Notice what changes there.

There is a quiet strength in choosing what you give your time and care to.

What are you welcoming into your life? What are you ready to put down?

You stay in control.

Spring is making itself known here in Australia.

Our spring equinox fell on 23 September. At the same moment, people in the Northern Hemisphere reached their autumn equinox.

These turning points carry different meanings across cultures. Some celebrations welcome new growth. Others make space for ancestral remembrance or gratitude for the harvest. Their names and dates belong to their own traditions.

Explore Ostara, Alban Eilir, Nowruz, Higan and Mabon, including which season each belongs to and the meaning behind the illustrations.

Then take a moment to notice the place where you live. What has changed since winter? What is beginning to grow in your own life?

Grace’s Spirit Quest reflection 🌿

Grace speaks about learning the making processes, creating her own ceremonial tools and the gratitude she carries from the experience.

That practical element matters at Spirit Quest. You are not simply watching someone else make. You are guided through the process so that the drum, be**er, rattle and saining tool you return home with have been shaped through your own hands and attention.

The Harvest Moon Beneath a Southern Sky

Tonight, the full Moon rises carrying a name born in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Harvest Moon is the full Moon closest to the northern autumn equinox. Its name comes from an old practical relationship between people, land and sky. At this time of year, the Moon rises soon after sunset for several evenings, giving farmers more light to gather crops before winter arrived.

The name has been recorded in English since the early 1700s, although people have watched the Moon guide seasonal work for far longer.

Here in Australia, the land is telling a different story.

We have crossed into spring. New growth is stirring, birds are nesting and the world around us is opening rather than drawing inward. So while tonight’s Moon may be called the Harvest Moon in northern traditions, it does not mark our own season of harvest.

Perhaps its meaning for us is not about gathering crops, but gathering awareness.

What has grown quietly within you?

What are you ready to recognise?

What might you carry forward as the season turns towards warmth and new life?

The Moon may be shared across the world, but the season belongs to the land beneath our feet.

Tonight, step outside and meet her where you are.

Exact fullness in Brisbane: approximately 2:49 am, Sunday 27 September.

Athina’s Spirit Quest reflection 🌿

Sometimes the clearest way to understand a retreat is to hear from someone who has lived it. Athina’s reflection speaks to the wider journey making, drumming, circle, quieter moments and the experience of returning home with something made by your own hands.

The Land Does Not Read the Calendar

The calendar says spring.

In these spring photographs, the kangaroos still have their lovely thick coats from winter.

There is something to notice in that. A change of date does not mean every sign of the last season has gone.

A calendar helps us organise time. Alongside it, we can make room for what is happening around us.

What is flowering? Which birds can you hear? What are the animals doing? What has changed since the last rain?

And what is still carrying a little of the season before?

Take a moment to look at the place where you live. Let the details be part of how you recognise the turning year.

What have you been noticing?
