📚 BOOK WEEK 2026
Compass got into the spirit of Book Week once again this year, with students and staff dressing up as their favourite book characters for our annual parade!

This year's theme, "Symphony of Stories," celebrated the magic of storytelling and the many voices, characters and adventures found within the pages of a great book.
It was wonderful to see everyone embracing the joy of reading and imagination, and plenty of talent on display with the work on costumes.

A big thank you to all who participated and helped make this year's Book Week celebration such a memorable one! ✨

🐶 NATIONAL SKILLS WEEK: FOLLOWING A PASSION

Having grown up on a hobby farm and with a lifelong love of animals, Nicholas has been working towards a future caring for animals.

He has completed his Advanced Care 1 Stackable VET (TAFE) and Certificate II in Animal Care, and is currently undertaking his Advanced Care 2 Stackable VET (TAFE).

To build his confidence and skills within the community when he first arrived at Compass, Nicholas explored a range of opportunities, unertaking units within Certificate I in Workplace Skills, RSA, First Aid, Barista Training and even trying his hand at woodwork.

Nicholas' journey shows how every skill learned can help build confidence, capability and a pathway towards a dream career.

✨ NATIONAL SKILLS WEEK: EXPLORING EVERY OPPORTUNITY

Jarrett is a talented young person who is keeping his options open and making the most of every opportunity to discover where his future may lead.

Since joining Compass late last year, he's completed Barista Training, Certificate I in Hospitality and his White Card, participated in a 10-week 'Try a Trade' construction industry program and is currently completing his Certificate II in Cookery.

Through trying different industries and building new skills, Jarrett is exploring a range of future pathways, from becoming a librarian to pursuing a career in plumbing.

Jarrett's journey is a great reminder that VET is not only about preparing for a career, it's also about discovering your strengths and finding your spark.

MAKING THE CUT

Our Tinkering Space has been buzzing with activity as more of our young people take on a variety of projects, making the most of the wide range of tools and equipment available.

From planning and designing to measuring, cutting, building and finishing, they're developing practical skills while bringing their creative ideas to life.

These hands-on projects encourage problem-solving, critical thinking, patience and attention to detail, while also building confidence and independence.

It's inspiring to see their creativity and craftsmanship grow with each project.

🍽️ NATIONAL SKILLS WEEK: COOKING UP SUCCESS

Mary's passion for hospitality has flourished through completing her Certificate I in Hospitality and Certificate II in Cookery.

Through her studies, she's explored different cooking techniques and cuisines while developing the professionalism and kitchen etiquette needed to succeed in the industry, with support from Adelaide Institute of Hospitality’s Chef Cole along the way.

Her hard work and leadership were recognised when she received the Leadership, Initiative and Engagement Award from AIOH at the end of last term.

Following a work placement at Peel Street, Mary impressed the team so much that she was offered an employment opportunity.

A fantastic example of how VET can open doors and create real career pathways.

☕ ESPRESSO YOURSELF

Our young people are brewing up something special! 👏

Tuesday marked just the second session of our second on-site Barista Training course for the year, and they're already showing off some impressive skills, especially when it comes to latte art! 🎨

A huge thank you once again to Nate from the Adelaide Institute of Hospitality for sharing his expertise and helping our students build valuable skills and confidence.

This coming Tuesday, our budding baristas will be putting their training to the test as they take orders and serve the Compass community.

Let's just say there'll be no shortage of willing taste-testers! 😁

⚖️ KNOW THE LAW, KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!

Yesterday we had Vanessa and Anna from the Legal Services Commission of South Australia join us to deliver a Police & Your Rights Workshop and Legal Drop-In Clinic for our young people.

Students learned about their rights and responsibilities when interacting with police, including searches, interviews, arrests and move-on directions 🚔

The Legal Drop-In Clinic also provided a safe, confidential space for students to ask questions, seek advice, and explore their options with qualified legal professionals 💬

A big thank you to Vanessa and Anna for helping our young people build confidence and knowledge about the law.
