Key Historical Facts:
The Declaration:
On June 12, 1898, General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed independence from Spain from the window of his grand home in Kawit, Cavite.

National Symbols:
The historic 1898 ceremony marked the very first time the National Flag of the Philippines was formally unfurled and the national anthem, Lupang Hinirang, was played.

The Date Change:
The country originally observed its independence day on July 4, marking the day the United States granted full sovereignty in 1946. In 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal officially changed the holiday to June 12 to honor the true 1898 revolution.
