Last month, our research team led by Professor James Smith, Brenden Petterson, Cameron Stokes and Dr Bryce Brickley had a privilege to spend a week in Yarrabah, "Paradise by the Sea," with the incredible team at Gurriny Yealamucka Health Services Aboriginal Corporation 🤩

🎉 Congratulations to Dr Anosh Sivashanmugarajah, named the 2026 Northern Territory Clinical Educator of the Year by the Confederation of Postgraduate Medical Education Councils! 🏆

Dr Anosh has mentored junior doctors and Flinders University medical students during his time in Alice Springs.

💬 "It's been an absolute pleasure supervising and giving back both formally and informally to the Flinders University medical students during my time in Alice Springs."

As NT winner, he'll now go on to represent the Territory against other states and territories across Australia and NZ, with the overall winner announced in November 2026. Good luck, Dr Anosh! 👏

🩺 Meet the newest doctors on the block! Second-year NT medical student Jay organised a Teddy Bear Hospital at The Essington School, giving kids the chance to be the doctor for a day.

With help from fellow med students Claire, Zahra, Eirin and Kamal, each child took their teddy through a general check-up, an x-ray and a bandaging station before "graduating" as an official teddy bear doctor, complete with their treated patient, an x-ray and a check-up list to take home 🧸

The event was part of Jay's personal and professional development project for the NT Medical Program, and a wonderful way to help kids feel a little more comfortable with doctors and hospitals. Great work, Jay and team! 👏

✅ Debby Mauger and Dr Sam Heard kicked things off by facilitating a pre-conference workshop on building a community of practice in clinical education.

✅ Melba Ridd is presenting "How NT clinical supervisors make supervision training matter."

✅ Assoc Prof Emma Kennedy, Dr Siobhan Hensey and Assoc Prof Kishan Pandithage are presenting a poster on "Strengthening Consultation Skills Learning for Health Professional Training in the NT Context."

✅ Leigh Moore and Yiting Han are presenting "Where do they come from, where do they go? Placement to practice journeys" on behalf of the Journeys research team.

What's it really like to do your allied health placement in Alice Springs? 🌅

📍 Alice Springs placements are open to interstate allied health students (as well as medical students from the NT and interstate) in later years of study.

🚨 A single vehicle rollover, 150km from the nearest town with a hospital. Skid marks, shattered glass and multiple casualties scattered nearby.

That was the scenario Year 3 Bachelor of Paramedicine (NT) students faced during a Mass Casualty Incident training exercise on our Casuarina campus in Darwin.

As lecturer Sam Yeates puts it: "These incidents are rare but high stress, and in remote regions resources are overwhelmed fast. That's why hands-on practice matters before students face the real thing." 💪
