NT 190 & 491 Nomination Opens: Onshore Applicants
Already living, studying or working in the Northern Territory?
The NT 2026β27 Skilled Migration Nomination Program opens for new applications on 21 August 2026, with updated eligibility criteria.
If you are already in the NT, here are the key pathways you should know about.
NT Graduates-
Subclass 190:
Generally, you need to have completed at least 2 academic years, or 4 semesters, of full-time study at an NT-based institution.
If you are eligible for the Subclass 485 pathway, there are two main pathways to consider.
6-month pathway-
After completing your studies, you generally need to have lived continuously in the NT for at least 6 months while holding a 485 visa or associated bridging visa.
You will generally also need current employment or a recent job offer in your nominated occupation or a closely related skilled occupation.
Certain exceptional pathways may apply for eligible regional or remote NT employment or designated critical-sector employment.
12-month pathway-
After completing your studies, if you have lived continuously in the NT for at least 12 months while holding a 485 visa or associated bridging visa, genuine and sustained efforts and progress towards securing relevant NT employment may be considered.
Over 35 and not eligible for a 485?
NT graduates over 35 who are not eligible for a Subclass 485 visa may still have a specific Subclass 190 pathway.
Employment or a recent job offer in your nominated occupation or a closely related skilled occupation is important, although certain exceptional regional, remote or critical-sector pathways may also apply.
NT Graduate: Subclass 491-
Completed the required 2 academic years of NT study?
You may be considered for NT 491 nomination if you can demonstrate genuine and sustained efforts and progress towards securing employment with an NT employer in your nominated occupation or a closely related skilled occupation.
This could include relevant job applications, employment, professional association membership and positive engagement with NT industry contacts.
NT Residents
Already living and working in the Northern Territory?
Different requirements apply depending on whether you are targeting 190 or 491.
Subclass 190
Generally, you need:
β’ At least 2 consecutive years living in the NT immediately before applying
β’ At least 2 consecutive years of full-time employment in the NT
β’ Employment available for at least another 12 months
β’ Employment in your nominated occupation or a closely related skilled occupation, unless an exceptional pathway applies
Subclass 491-
Generally, you need:
β’ At least 12 consecutive months living in the NT immediately before applying
β’ At least 6 consecutive months of full-time NT employment
β’ Employment available for at least another 12 months
Certain exceptional pathways may also apply to eligible regional or remote employment and designated critical-sector employment.
Employment matters
For NT Graduate and NT Resident applications, employment claimed towards nomination must meet MigrationNT requirements.
Full-time employment generally means at least 35 hours per week, including equivalent full-time employment through one or more part-time positions.
Additional requirements can also apply to the NT employer and the employment being claimed.
General eligibility requirements-
You must also meet the relevant Australian Government and MigrationNT requirements, including:
β’ Be under 45 at the time of nomination
β’ Hold a valid skills assessment for your nominated occupation
β’ Have at least Competent English, unless otherwise specified
β’ Meet the skilled migration points test with at least 65 points
β’ Demonstrate a genuine commitment to living and working in the Northern Territory
Applications open: 21 August 2026
Meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee NT nomination. Applications are assessed according to the applicable criteria and individual circumstances.
Not sure whether NT 190 or 491 could be right for you?
Your pathway can depend on your study history, current visa, age, NT residence, employment, nominated occupation and other individual circumstances.

π’ NT MIGRATION UPDATE | 190 & 491 NOMINATION
Important information recently shared by MigrationNT:
πΉ Applications will not be prioritised simply based on submission date or time. Priority sectors and other relevant factors may be considered.
πΉ Incomplete or poor-quality applications may be refused without further requests for additional information or documents.
πΉ Priority processing may be considered where a visa deadline is within the next 28 days, such as visa expiry.
πΉ Commitment letters should be tailored to the applicantβs individual circumstances.
β οΈ Key takeaway: Donβt rush just to lodge early. Focus on submitting a complete, accurate and well-prepared application from the start.

π’ NT NOMINATION 2026β27: IMPORTANT CHANGES!
Northern Territory Skilled Migration nominations are opening from 21 August 2026, with some important changes to the eligibility criteria, particularly for NT graduates seeking Subclass 190 nomination.
NT GRADUATE β SUBCLASS 190
Previously, after completing the required NT study and living in the NT for 6 months after graduation, some graduates could rely on genuine and sustained efforts to find skilled employment.
Under the updated 2026β27 criteria, the requirements have changed.
For the 6-month post-study pathway, applicants generally need:
β
Current employment or a recent job offer in their nominated occupation or a closely related skilled occupation; OR
β
In exceptional circumstances, at least 3 months of employment in a regional or remote area of the NT; OR
β
Employment or a job offer in a designated critical sector.
WHAT IF YOU ARE STILL LOOKING FOR A RELEVANT JOB?
If you are relying on genuine and sustained efforts to secure employment, you may now need to have lived continuously in the NT for at least 12 months after completing your studies, while holding a Subclass 485 visa or associated bridging visa.
This is an important change for NT graduates who were planning their Subclass 190 pathway based mainly on job-search efforts.
GRADUATES AGED OVER 35
For graduates aged over 35 who are not eligible for a Subclass 485 visa, the updated 190 pathway focuses on:
β
Employment or a recent job offer in the nominated or closely related occupation; OR
β
Eligible employment in a regional or remote NT area in exceptional circumstances; OR
β
Employment or a job offer in a designated critical sector.
The job-search-efforts-only pathway is not listed under this category.
STRONGER EMPLOYMENT & EMPLOYER SUPPORT REQUIREMENTS
If you are using NT employment to support an onshore nomination application, the employment must meet MigrationNT requirements.
Depending on the applicable pathway, this can include requirements relating to:
β Employment hours
β Market salary
β How long the employer has been operating in the NT
β Genuine local recruitment efforts
β Employer support for your nomination
β Why you are suitable or important to the business
This means simply having a job may not automatically mean the employment meets the nomination requirements.
OFFSHORE PRIORITY OCCUPATION STREAM β CURRENTLY CLOSED
MigrationNT has also confirmed that the Offshore Priority Occupation Stream is currently closed to new applications due to a large number of applications carried over from the previous program year.
However, eligible offshore applicants may still be able to apply through:
β
Offshore Job Offer Stream
β
Offshore Family Stream
New applications open: 21 August 2026
IMPORTANT
Meeting the minimum eligibility requirements does *not guarantee NT nomination*. Applications are assessed by MigrationNT based on the applicable criteria and individual circumstances.
NOT SURE HOW THESE CHANGES AFFECT YOU?
Your pathway may depend on your age, visa status, NT study history, length of residence, employment, nominated occupation and individual circumstances.
Book a FREE consultation with our Registered Migration Agent to discuss your circumstances and understand which NT nomination pathway may be available to you.
Contact Study Universe today to book your free consultation.

What a wonderful evening in Darwin! π₯
We had a great time hosting a BBQ with the Bangladesh HP Cricket Team. Good food, lots of laughs, great conversations and simply a lovely evening spent together. β€οΈ
A big thanks to all the players and coaching staff for joining us. Special thanks to Imrul Kayes, Sabbir Rahman, Abdul Gaffar Saqlain and Shamim Patwary. It was really nice having you all with us and sharing some relaxed moments away from the cricket field. π§π©π
And a big shout-out to our SU Family! π
Even though it was a very last-minute plan, many of our students, clients and well-wishers still made the time to join us. Seeing you there made the evening even better.
Our students are our pride, and it always means a lot when the SU Family comes together, not just for study or work, but to enjoy moments like this together.
Thank you everyone for making the night one to remember.
Wishing the Bangladesh HP Cricket Team a great time in Darwin and all the very best for the matches ahead. Keep making Bangladesh proud!
