It’s Week Six and Here Are Our Picks!

It’s Week Six and Parap Primary has been buzzing! From bike safety and sporting success to excursions, assemblies and professional learning, there has been plenty happening across our school.

🚲 Road Safety
This week, all classes met with our Road Safety team to brush up on our bike safety skills. Students in Years 4–6 have also begun visiting the Bike Safety team, learning about safe riding, decision-making and staying alert on the road.

🏅 Student Celebrations
We are so proud to celebrate some fantastic sporting achievements from our Parap students!
Congratulations to Ibukun (Year 6), who represented the Darwin Region at the NT Schools Sport Athletics Championships this week. Ibukun took home a silver medal and set a fantastic new personal best! 👏
We also congratulate Lachie, Lillie and Pippa on their outstanding performances at the NT Short Course Swimming Championships over the weekend. All three swimmers collected medals and achieved numerous personal bests. 🏊‍♀️
A huge congratulations to Lachie, who set a new NT record in the 100m Butterfly and was named Junior Male Champion! Lachie and Lillie have also qualified for School Nationals. What an achievement!
Also, a big shout out to Beau from Year 6 who represented the NT in Canberra for AFL.
We are Parap Proud! 💙💛

📚 Teachers as Learners
Our teachers have also been busy learning this week, engaging in professional learning to strengthen our approach to Explicit Instruction.
After reviewing our school model, teachers worked in learning groups to share and reflect on the Daily Reviews used in their classrooms. Daily Reviews help consolidate learning and strengthen students’ understanding and recall. It was wonderful to see learning and ideas shared across classrooms from Transition to Year 6, including Performing Arts.

🏛️ Future Parliamentarians
Our Year 5 students headed to Parliament House this week as part of their HaSS learning. They explored the building and learned more about the processes and systems that underpin our government. Perhaps we have some future parliamentarians in the making!

🐝 Assembly
We finished the week with a wonderful assembly, including special attendance prizes for three lucky students who have achieved 100% attendance so far this year! We hope they enjoy their free tickets to the AFLW this weekend.
We also celebrated World Bee Day with the help of 2 Giallouris and 6 Berger. Their performance of the famous Waggle Dance was certainly a buzz!

Duck Dive into Week 5!
It has been a while since we’ve enjoyed a full week at school without a public holiday! We certainly made the most of it, with plenty happening across Parap Primary and a strong focus on curriculum and learning.

📚 Parent Workshop
Our Early Years families had the opportunity to learn more about supporting literacy learning at home. Ms Sutton, Mrs Chappell and Ms Sinclair shared the key components of literacy within the curriculum, along with practical strategies to support homework, nightly reading and children’s ongoing literacy development.
Thank you to all the parents who attended and contributed such thoughtful questions to the discussion. We love seeing our school and families working together to support our students’ learning!

🏊 Swimming Carnival
Today, our Year 4–6 students headed to Parap Pool for the Parap Primary School Swimming Carnival. As students made their way to the pool, it was a sea of house colours, posters and plenty of excitement!
This year, we were thrilled to use some amazing technology, including touch pads to record race times and ensure accurate results for our swimmers.
🏆 Congratulations to Hudson House on taking out the Swimming Carnival!

A huge thank you to the wonderful Mrs Stephensen for her incredible organisation and planning. Her hard work ensured everyone had a fantastic day. We also extend our thanks to our fantastic parent volunteers, who generously gave their time to support the carnival. As a special thank you, Laneway kindly gifted a coffee voucher to each— we hope they enjoy a well-deserved coffee! ☕️

🌭 Sausage Sizzle
To finish off a wonderful swimming carnival, students returned to school ready to refuel at our sausage sizzle. There were plenty of hungry tummies ready to chow down!
Thank you to our amazing helpers, Jo, Miss Meg and Miss Fiona, and a very special thank you to Mr Keo, who was presented with a Parap Apron in recognition of his ongoing dedication to keeping our hungry students well fed. He always seems to be behind a barbecue!

🎭 Encore, encore… it’s Week 4! 🎭

Disconnected 📵
What a spectacular night! Tuesday evening was the culmination of weeks of dedication from our incredible students and staff, supported by our wonderful Parap families.
The evening began with families enjoying delicious food and spending time getting to know one another before heading into the hall for our much-anticipated performances. We loved watching every class take us on a journey through time, exploring how music and technology have changed our lives. The cheering, clapping and excitement from our audience made the night truly magical!
A huge thank you to everyone who attended and supported our ‘Disconnected’ concert. A special shout-out to Miss Richardson and Jess for sharing their expertise in music, acting and stage lighting and helping bring the whole production to life.

Going Bananas! 🍌
A big thank you to Simon George & Sons for their generous donation of boxes of delicious bananas to our school. We can’t wait to see what our Eco Warriors get up to with these special treats!

Australian Primary Principals Day 🌸
Our wonderful Mrs Hyke was showered with thoughtful gifts at assembly this morning to celebrate her dedication and commitment to our school community. Each class designed beautiful flowers and created heartfelt messages to show their appreciation. 💐
Mrs Hyke also took the opportunity to thank Mrs Stephensen and Mrs Sparks for their ongoing support as Assistant Principals. We are certainly lucky to have such a dedicated leadership team at Parap!

Assembly Excitement!
What an exciting assembly we had this morning! Asleigh Taylor kicked things off by drawing the lucky raffle winners from Tuesday night’s concert, with plenty of very excited students and parents waiting to collect their prizes.
We were also thrilled to welcome NT Cricket, who gave lucky students the chance to win free passes to the upcoming Test Match. 🏏
To finish our assembly, Ms Rintoule’s Year 4 class presented a wonderful performance celebrating the diversity and rich cultural heritage of Australia. What a fantastic way to finish the week!

We guarantee it’s Week 3!

Disconnected! 🎭📵
Week 3 has been a whirlwind of rehearsals, set design and costume checks as we prepare for our spectacular school concert on Tuesday 4 August. This year's production, Disconnected, follows the adventures of three children who are sent through time when the Wi-Fi goes down!
Every class has been working incredibly hard and is excited to showcase their performance on the night, including our preschool students, who will be joining us on stage this year. We can't wait to see our talented students shine!

Cyber Safety 💻
Following workshops with the Australian Federal Police for both staff and parents on supporting children to stay safe online, Mrs Lawrence has been reinforcing important cyber safety strategies with our students. This week, students used Canva to create and share posters highlighting practical ways to stay safe in online environments. Regular conversations at home about online safety can make a significant difference in helping children develop safe digital habits.

Public Holiday ☀️
A reminder that Monday 3 August is a public holiday. We hope everyone enjoys some quality family time and makes the most of this beautiful weather. We'll see everyone back on Tuesday, ready for an exciting day before our much-anticipated concert that evening!

🌟 What's New in Week 2? 🌟

🏕️ Year 6 Camp
Our adventurous Year 6 students and staff headed off on their annual camp on Monday, returning on Wednesday after three action-packed days. Following the bus trip to Batchelor, students challenged themselves on the high ropes course, tackled the rock-climbing wall, cooled off with swimming, enjoyed adventure games, explored the area on bike rides and, of course, sampled the delicious camp food!

A huge thank you to Ms Coffin, Ms Hawken, Ms Berger, Mr Dimi and our wonderful parent volunteers Adrian, Chloe and Nick. We are so grateful for the time, care and enthusiasm you gave to make this camp such a memorable experience for our students.

♻️ Eco Warriors
Our dedicated Eco Warriors, alongside Mr Anita, were back in action this week helping to reduce our environmental footprint. From sorting recyclables to ensuring waste is placed in the correct bins, our students continue to show great leadership in caring for our school and our planet.

🎭 Assembly
Our Week 2 assembly will be held on Thursday, hosted by our Year 5 Student Representative Council members. We are also looking forward to a special dance performance by Mr Anita's Year 5 class. Families are warmly invited—we hope to see you there!

📅 Public Holiday Reminder

Week 1 is done! 🎉
What a wonderful start to Term 3 at Parap Primary School and Preschool!
There were smiles everywhere on Tuesday morning as we welcomed students and families back for another exciting term. On Monday, our dedicated staff spent the day engaged in professional learning, exploring the Northern Territory Learning and Teaching Model, analysing student achievement data, and developing their skills in iPad applications that will support learning throughout the term.

Chief Minister visit
We were delighted to welcome Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro and Laurie Zio MLA on Tuesday morning. They visited to wish our students and staff a fantastic Term 3 and were excited to hear about the many exciting events and learning opportunities planned for the months ahead. Our staff were also treated to a box of sweet treats to help celebrate the beginning of the new term.

NAIDOC week
This week, our students and staff -Darrandirra (all of us) proudly celebrated NAIDOC Week, recognising and honouring the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Each class explored different components ranging from storytelling, art, languages and geography. The younger students even explored maps to see and hear the different language groups spoken and even learnt a song.

Playground fun
The playground was full of energy from the very first day! Our students enjoyed soccer, football, bike riding and even creating a new fairy garden. As always, the hall was buzzing as our House Captains led fun games, while the library offered students opportunities to enjoy laptops, LEGO, crafts and quiet activities. There really is something for everyone at breaks!

Attendance celebration
Congratulations to Year 2 Sinclair, who enjoyed delicious pizzas kindly delivered by Laurie Zio in recognition of their outstanding attendance throughout Term 2. We also celebrated Year 5 Houghton and Year 6 Hawken for their exceptional punctuality. We can't wait to see which classes earn these awards at the end of Term 3!

Welcome to our new staff
We are thrilled to welcome Ms Sapana and Ms Claire to our Preschool team as they support our newly established preschool class. We also warmly welcome Miss C, who has joined us following Mrs Davies' departure. We know they will all be wonderful additions to our Parap community.

Pitch Black 2026
This morning, students from Years 2–6 attended a special assembly presented by the Royal Australian Air Force. They learnt about Exercise Pitch Black 2026, the purpose of the international training exercise, and had the opportunity to ask questions of defence personnel from around the world.
Don't forget that on Thursday evening there will be a special aircraft flyover that can be viewed from Mindil Beach—a fantastic opportunity to see some of the aircraft involved in the exercise.

It’s Week 10 and we are ZEN!

What an incredible term it has been at Parap Primary! We wrapped up Term 2 with celebrations, special events and plenty of reasons to be proud.

🏆 Values Awards
Today we celebrated our Values Award recipients, with three students from every class recognised for consistently demonstrating our school values. It was a wonderful way to finish the term and acknowledge the many students who make our school such a positive place to learn and grow.

🤝 Working Together
Our School Captains and Vice-Captains continue to organise and support daily activities in the hall during breaks. This week, the Year 6 students teamed up with our Year 2 students for a huge game of Poison Ball. With more than 50 students involved, it was fantastic to see everyone having fun, building connections and demonstrating cooperation.

🎆 Territory Day
With Territory Day celebrations just around the corner on 1 July, students spent time reflecting on what makes the Northern Territory such a unique and special place to live, learn and grow. Classes shared their ideas and experiences as they prepared to celebrate all things Territory.

🏎️ V8 Supercars Experience
Friday was an exciting day for our student leaders. Ms Coffin accompanied our House Captains and Vice-Captains to learn more about the Supercars, while Mrs Sparks took the School Captains and Vice-Captains to the Chief Minister’s Marquee for an afternoon of activities. Students were also fortunate to meet the Hon. Lia Finocchiaro and MLA Laurie Zio, making it a truly memorable experience.

☀️As Term 2 comes to a close, we would like to thank our students, staff and families for another wonderful term of learning and achievement. We also wish Mrs Davies all the best as she leaves on maternity leave.

We hope everyone has a safe, happy and relaxing school holiday break and we look forward to welcoming our students back on Tuesday 14th July 2026.

🏊 Swimming Lessons
Students from Years 3 to 6 began their first week of swimming lessons this week. A huge thank you to the wonderful family volunteers who supported classes each day and attended lessons with students. We appreciate your time and support. Students will continue their lessons again next week and are already building confidence and skills in the water.

🏸 Badminton Success
We are so proud of Andrew from 6 Berger for his outstanding achievement at the NT Open Badminton competition. Andrew won 1st place in the Under 13 Boys Doubles and was also runner-up in the singles competition. What an incredible effort!

🏐 Netball Achievement
Congratulations to Olivia from 6 Hawken on her personal achievement in representing Parap Primary School and the Darwin Region at the NT School Sport State Championships for netball. Well done Olivia!

💻 ThinkUKnow Online Safety
This week, staff and families participated in powerful workshops focused on online safety. Saisha from the Australian Federal Police, alongside Leroy the Police Dog, unpacked important information about online safety concerns for young people and the ways these issues can impact our lives. It was a timely reminder for us all to check our privacy settings and continue having honest conversations with children about their online interactions. Next term, students will also participate in targeted workshops to complement the work they already do with Mrs Lawrence.

🎭 Legally Blonde
Our Year 6 students were fortunate to visit Darwin High School on Friday to enjoy the Year 8 and 9 production of Legally Blonde. Students were incredibly impressed by the polished acting, singing, costumes and staging. Beyond the fantastic entertainment, the experience also provided students with another opportunity to think about high school and the exciting opportunities that await them next year.

What a wonderful week of learning, achievement and opportunity at Parap! 🌟

Oh Week 8, was so great!

Week 8 was packed with energy, creativity and the Parap community spirit!

🏫 Year 6 Presentations
Our Year 6 students had the opportunity to pitch their individual presentations about ‘Change in Our Community’ to Laurie Zio, Mrs Hyke, Mrs Stephensen, Mr Patrik and Mrs Sparks. Students confidently shared speeches supported by dioramas, digital models and handwritten work. Ms Laurie Zio commented that our future is in great hands after hearing the thoughtful ideas and deep thinking our students shared about supporting local communities.

🏅 Primary Years Sports Carnival
What happens when over 200 Parap students take over Marrara Stadium? High energy, teamwork and plenty of school spirit! The 2026 Sports Carnival was a huge success, with students, teachers and parents all joining in for an unforgettable day — including the always entertaining teacher and parent race! Congratulations to Hudson House for taking out the coveted House Trophy.

A huge thank you to Ray White Darwin for their generous sponsorship, helping to bus our students to the stadium so they could experience competing in a professional sporting environment.

🎉 Early Years Sports Carnival
Thursday morning was a wonderful experience for our Preschool to Year 2 students. The carnival began with exciting 100m races, supported by cheering crowds of parents and older students. Classes then rotated through energetic tabloid activities, with even a dance stop in the hall along the way!

Thank you again to Ray White Darwin for providing delicious donuts and hot coffee for the adults cheering on our students.

🎶 Assembly Highlights
Transition Sutton and Year 6 Coffin shared their musical talents with the catchy and fun ‘A Ram Sam Sam Dance’. The audience enthusiastically joined in with the actions, creating plenty of smiles and laughter across the hall.

Our school also welcomed Road Safety NT for an important presentation. Alongside Hector, students learned valuable reminders about staying safe on roads, bikes and in cars. As we head towards the holidays, this was a timely and important refresher for everyone. Remember, Stop, Look, Listen and Think!

Our Impression of Week 7 🌟

What a fantastic week of literature, art and community spirit at Parap Primary School!

🏮 Chinese Language Classroom
Ms Yanni has been busy creating a wonderful new space for students to engage in their language learning. The area previously used for Preschool has been renovated into a vibrant Chinese language classroom and multi-purpose learning space for the whole school to enjoy.

📚 National Simultaneous Storytime
This week we joined over 2 million students across Australia to enjoy the story Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller. Even the noise from the jets couldn’t distract us! As classes listened, they also had to identify our mystery guest readers as part of a competition. Congratulations to 5 Houghton and 2 Sinclair for correctly guessing every reader! Their reward was an extra-long play session, including some soccer — just like in the story.

🏛️ Year 6 Excursion
Year 6 students were fortunate to visit MAGNT, Darwin’s incredible museum and art gallery. Students explored the exhibits up close before working together to create their own collaborative pieces using their best teamwork.

🧸 Pyjama Day
The Student Representative Council did an amazing job organising Pyjama Day to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Students and teachers rolled straight out of bed and into school in their favourite pyjamas! Thank you to everyone who supported this student-led initiative for such a worthwhile cause.

🎨 Seabreeze
Mrs Hyke was thrilled to accept our 3rd place certificate and cheque for $250 for our Seabreeze artwork entry. You can still view the artwork proudly displayed in our front office.

🏐 NT Under 12 Netball Team
Congratulations to Thomas from 6 Berger on his selection in the NT Under 12 Netball Team! This is the first-ever NT boys team selected, and they will travel interstate in September to represent the Territory. What a proud achievement!

🎭 Darwin Street Art Festival
Have you noticed the colourful artworks appearing around Parap? Opposite the school and throughout the suburb, you can discover some incredible street art installations. Perhaps it could inspire your weekend adventures!
