About the Position

The First Nations Student Programs (FNSP) team supports First Nations students to succeed in Vocational and Higher Education pathways. The FNSP team administers funding programs that support student participation, including the Away from Base (AFB) program.

The Program Officer – Away from Base works within the FNSP team and is primarily responsible for coordinating travel and related support for First Nations students who are required to travel away from home to meet compulsory course requirements, such as workshops, placements, and training blocks.

Working as part of a small, collaborative team, the Program Officer provides practical, student-focused support and contributes to the effective day-to-day administration of the AFB program.

The First Nations Leadership, Executive Officer plays a key role in supporting cultural governance within the portfolio and CDU community. This includes ensuring that decision-making, compliance, and strategic initiatives are informed by First Nations cultural protocols, values and leadership practices. This position provides high-level administrative support and manages key strategic projects on behalf of the DVCFNL, including preparation for various First Nations Governance committee meetings; preparation of key documents, including executive reports and discussion papers; and facilitating communication between the DVCFNL and the internal and external stakeholders of the First Nations Leadership portfolio.

The Executive Officer also works closely with the senior leadership of the university, including Executives, Academic leaders, Directors, Managers and other staff across the University to exchange information and provide advice on strategic projects and initiatives. This includes ensuring that First Nations perspectives, protocols, and priorities are embedded in decision-making processes and institutional strategies.

Externally, the Executive Officer liaises with Government agencies, University partners and consultants and businesses, First Nations peak bodies and communities – especially across the Northern Territory.

This role also coordinates the planning and delivery of high profile First Nations events, including CDU’s presence at Garma Festival and coordination of the Vincent Lingiari Memorial Lecture, ensuring cultural integrity and alignment with CDU’s strategic priorities.

Coinciding with the annual Vincent Lingiari Memorial Lecture at CDU will be the opening of a new art exhibition at Arthouse Café, developed at Karungkarni Art Centre on Gurindji Country.

Wanyjika-warla: Finding Yourself on Gurindji Country presents a series of paintings created for a new collaborative children's book. Inspired by the complexity of Gurindji navigational language, deep connections to Country and the incredible ability of some Gurindji people to sense the Earth’s magnetic field, the artworks incorporate ideas and experience from Gurindji everyday life as well as Western science.

The Wanyjika-warla book project follows the multi-award winning Tamarra: A Story of Termites on Gurindji Country, published in 2022 by Hardie Grant Explore.
