Every child in Australia receives some level of government funding, including those attending Independent schools. Funding exists to support accessibility, so families can choose the school that best meets their child’s needs.

In the NT, vast distances, remote communities, and culturally diverse learning environments means families rely on a range of schooling options to find the right fit for their children.

Across the NT, Independent Aboriginal Community Schools work with philanthropic partners and mainstream schools to expand opportunities for students. These partnerships help fill gaps that funding doesn’t always cover.

The term “private school” gets used a lot, but it doesn’t reflect how education is structured in Australia. In policy and funding, schools are grouped into three sectors: Government, Independent, and Catholic.

Independent schools aren’t necessarily “private”. They are autonomous, community‑run, and diverse, including Christian schools, Remote Aboriginal Community Schools, Steiner education, and other unique models across the NT. Independent schools play a vital role in offering families genuine choice.
