Just wanted to say a huge thank you to Tank and everyone who joined us yesterday at Darwin Services Club as we commemorated the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan and Vietnam Veterans’ Day.
On 18 August 1966, 18 Australians lost their lives. What began as a day to remember that battle now honours the nearly 60,000 Australians who served during the Vietnam War.
We remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, those who returned home, and all who served our country, both abroad and here at home.
Lest We Forget.

Vietnam Veterans’ Day | 18 August
Today we pause to honour the service and sacrifice of all Australians who served during the Vietnam War.
Between 1962 and 1973, around 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam, including members of the Army, Navy and Air Force. 523 Australians lost their lives and around 2,400 were wounded during the conflict.
Vietnam Veterans’ Day marks the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan (18 August 1966), where 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers from D Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, displayed extraordinary courage, determination and professionalism in one of Australia’s most recognised battles.
Today, we remember not only those who served, but also the challenges many Vietnam veterans faced when they returned home. Their resilience, strength and continued contribution to our nation deserve our deepest respect.
We honour the veterans, their families, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Thank you for your service.
Lest we forget.

Today we remember the 4 Aircrew from the 6th Aviation Regiment, who we lost in the MRH-90 crash 3 years ago.
On the 28th of July 2023, during a training exercise for Exercise Talisman Sabre, the MRH-90 helicopter carrying Captain Daniel Lyon, Lieutenant Maxwell Nugent, Warrant Officer Class Two Joseph Laycock, and Corporal Alexander Naggs crashed into the waters near Hamilton Island.
We Will Remember them. Lest We Forget! 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

With heavy hearts, we farewell Reg Chard, who peacefully passed away today at the remarkable age of 102.
Enlisting at 18, Reg marched through New Guinea's mountains, survived malaria at Eora Creek and the brutal fighting at Sanananda. When he came home, he built a life with his beloved Betty, then honoured his mates' sacrifice by devoting his later years to the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway, where his voice and spirit became irreplaceable.
We extend our deepest condolences to Reg's family, friends and all the lives he touched throughout his incredible life.
Rest easy, Reg. Your courage lives on in every step along that track.
Lest we forget.
