A friend of mine mentioned the other day that it's odd that I say 'shape' instead of 'pose' when I teach or talk about practice. I guess it is not the only unusual thing I say or do ๐Ÿ™‚, however this one is very intentional, for two reasons:

1- I am a trauma-informed yoga teacher and the word 'pose' can be activating, so I substitute it with 'shape'.

2- For general practice, I find that the word 'shape' free us a bit from the idea that the form we take should look a particular, specific way. Our asana (Sanskrit term often translated as 'posture' or 'pose' in English) practice teaches us to feel. It is not about the look of things, it is about the inner experience.
When teachers offer adjustments, the way it looks is only a tool that informs us how it probably feels in the body and the adjustment is to help feel more comfortable and steady or to better stimulate a particular area. We would often ask "How does that feel?" after adjusting.

So for lack of a better word, other than 'asana', I use the word 'shape'.
Although it is in recognition and care of how words can be activating or instil a distorted idea in us, the invitation is to not be disturbed by words.

Thank you to my very dear friends who raised the question and helped me clarify the message โค๏ธ
