Arabic Language and Cultures Society - ALAC

Arabic Language and Cultures Society - ALAC ALAC is the student society for Arabic Language and Cultures at the University of Sydney.

Our aim is to enrich the university experience of students from the Department of Arabic Language and Cultures, while also aiming to increase awareness about this vast, diverse and culturally rich region, which is often subject to Orientalist, anti-Arab and Islamophobic prejudices. ALAC provides information about faculty events, career nights, volunteer opportunities, cultural events and opportunities relevant for these students, as well as coordinating conversation groups and society events.

Refugee Youth Mentors needed for a new state-wide initiative.

Volunteers aged 21-35 will be paired with a young person from a refugee background. This program has been designed in close consultation with refugee youth and is aimed to support young people to achieve their goals through mentoring. Thorough training and ongoing support will be provided - all we ask is that you commit for twelve months and to meeting-up with your mentee once monthly.

This is a fantastic opportunity to share your experience and knowledge and spend time with an inspiring young person ... and perhaps to practise your Arabic! You'll be part of a broader community working to support young people from refugee backgrounds to shape their own futures.

Visit http://wsmrc.org.au/youth-programs/youth-mentor-program/ to sign up or for more information.

Our mentoring program aims to support and build the capacity of young people from a refugee background to achieve their goals and shape their own futures. We have designed a flexible, mixed-mode mentoring program that strives to enhance the economic, social and civic participation of young people an...

"I actually want to encourage more American writers and citizens to do this work. But, as an Arab American writer, I expect the best from our brothers and sisters of the pen, of writing, and literature, to be attentive to this epistemological violence, this cutting out by caricature, by accident, or by conscious intent. I expect an attention to this great blindspot of our empire, that we stop erasing Arabs. That we listen to Arabs. That we publish Arabs and Arab Americans, rather than those who report on those “natives” over there and their wily language. That we listen to everyone—not Arabs only, of course—who is being silenced"

A powerful piece from Phillip Metres in Literary Hub on contemporary Orientalism, and a great insight into current and future projects from Arab-Amerian creatives! 📲 📰

“Why do they have to show that? That—that—violence,” I said to my mom hours later, burying my face in my pillow, unable to sleep, my little body convulsing with this strange grief. In the packed da…
