Given that South Asia is a home to nearly one-third of world's population, an economically progressive region that also happens to be one of the most volatile areas having two nuclear-armed states (India and Pakistan) at loggerheads with each other over the issue of Kashmir - the region is in dire need to be studied in more depth. Additionally, issues of water security, poverty, terrorism, educati
on and healthcare manifest across the region, in nations including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives, which make it imperative to further inquire into the discourse surrounding the region. Additionally, South Asia is also at the heart of US and Chinese strategic foreign policy due to its strategic location, abundance of natural resources, and geo-political atmosphere that can potentially endanger the entire region and world at large, which inherently makes it an important region for Australian foreign policy. The study group is a student-led initiative at, but not restricted to, the University of Sydney that aims to bring together researchers, academics, and students with interest in South Asia. It hosts seminars and discussions, encourages research & publication and develops linkages with think tanks and other institutions working on South Asia in Australia. Lastly, it also provides a support network for students and researchers to learn from each other through information sharing.
