At Natural Choice Family Day Care, child safety and wellbeing will always come first. As the digital world continues to grow, we believe it is important to reflect on how childrenβs images are shared and the long-term impact this can have on their digital footprint.
We are encouraging educators and families to think more deeply about the use of identifiable images in documentation, group posts and social media. While families naturally love seeing photos of their children, it is also our responsibility to ensure we are protecting every childβs right to privacy and digital safety.
When documentation is shared through online platforms, images can quickly reach far beyond the intended audience. Even within small communities, photos may be viewed, downloaded or forwarded to people outside of our immediate circle and unfortunately, we can never truly know the intentions of everyone who may access them.
This doesnβt mean learning canβt still be captured beautifully and meaningfully.
Some of the most powerful documentation comes from:
β¨ photos of hands creating and exploring
β¨ children engaged in play from behind or at a distance
β¨ images of invitations to play, resources and learning environments
β¨ childrenβs voices, conversations and learning stories
β¨ documenting the process, not the pose
At Natural Choice FDC, we believe documentation should be purposeful, respectful and centred around childrenβs learning β not simply creating a stream of photos.
We also understand that changes like this can bring mixed emotions for families, and thatβs okay. Open conversations and education are important. By sharing the βwhyβ behind these decisions, we hope to work together with families to create safe, respectful practices that protect children both now and into the future.
Together, letβs continue advocating for childrenβs rights, safety and wellbeing in every space β including online.
