🙏 Today we celebrate the Feast of Saint Gregory the Great - Pope, Doctor of the Church and patron saint of musicians, singers, teachers and students.

🎉 SUPPORT STAFF RECOGNITION WEEK 2026 🎉

🔬SCIENCE WEEK AT ST JOHN’S!🧪

Science Week at St John’s Regional College was a lively celebration of curiosity, creativity and hands-on learning - with plenty of fun and friendly competition along the way! Throughout the week, students took part in exciting lunchtime activities that brought science to life beyond the classroom:

♟️Chess Competition– developing logical thinking, pattern recognition, forward planning and strategic problem-solving
🧪Sherbet Making– exploring acid–base reactions and discovering how particle size and surface area affect fizzing rates.
🍦Ice-Cream Making- combining chemistry and thermodynamics to investigate freezing-point depression, temperature changes and solidification- with delicious results!
🏗️Marshmallow Tower Challenge– testing students’ engineering skills as they designed, built and improved load-bearing structures while learning about forces, stability, materials and prototyping.

Our students embraced every challenge with enthusiasm, working collaboratively and learning from their results. It was a wonderful reminder that practical, inquiry-based learning deepens understanding and makes science truly memorable.

A special thank you to our Science and Technology Leader, Mr George Stofidis, and his team of passionate scientists for creating such an engaging week and continuing to inspire curiosity and a love of STEM among our students.

CELEBRATING THE PEOPLE AT THE HEART OF ST JOHN’S

Last week brought two very special days of celebration, reflection and service to the St John’s Regional College community. On Thursday evening, our staff and School Advisory Council gathered for our annual dinner – a wonderful evening of delicious food and heartfelt speeches celebrating the people who give so much to our College.

We were delighted to welcome special guests Sr Judy Bellesini, Ms Anne Young, Br Tony Cummins and Fr Joby George, helping us celebrate the traditions and community that continue to shape St John’s. We also acknowledged School Advisory Council Chair, Ms Cathy Pascal, who is stepping down after several years of dedicated service. We sincerely thank Cathy for her valued leadership, support and commitment to St John’s and wish her well for the future.

A highlight was recognising some extraordinary milestones:
⭐20 Years of Service: Ms Ursula Borg, Ms Sue Mulholland and Ms Angela Blaak
⭐40 Years of Service: Ms Anne Aldis. Four decades of service is an incredible achievement, representing generations of students, families and colleagues whose lives have been touched along the way.

The evening saw Sr Judy Bellesini present the Sr Margaret Bellesini Award to Ms Anne Aldis. Named in honour of the Presentation Sister who led the Middle School during St John’s early years, the award recognises a staff member who lives out our Presentation and Lasallian values through both words and actions.

On Friday, that spirit of service continued with our Staff Spirituality Day – Justice for All. The day began with keynote speaker Fr Brendan Connell, reflection and the celebration of the Eucharist, before staff headed into the community for an afternoon of volunteering – supporting primary schools, aged-care residents, Wellsprings for Women, community organisations and projects here at St John’s.

Two days with one powerful message: education is about people, service, community and making a difference.

To our long-serving staff, award recipients and every member of our St John’s community who brings their expertise, compassion and commitment to our students each day – thank you.

🏀 WHEN EXPERIENCE MEETS THE NEXT GENERATION! 🏀

Last week, St John’s Regional College was incredibly fortunate to welcome basketball star Ray Mitchell to the College for a very special coaching session with our Senior Boys Basketball Team.

Cool, calm and collected on court, Ray is known for bringing his A-game and giving his all every time he steps out to play. Whether it’s a tight contest or a big win, his focus, composure and commitment never waver – qualities that made him a fantastic role model for our aspiring basketballers.

Ray brings an enormous amount of experience to the court, having played for many years across Big V and NBL1, including with the Nunawading Spectres, Sunbury Jets and Chelsea Gulls. And our boys certainly made the most of having him at St John’s!🏀

They worked hard, listened and threw themselves into the session, gaining valuable insight into the skills, discipline, mindset and commitment required to perform at a high level.

We were particularly proud of the way our students represented their school. Their enthusiasm, respect and willingness to learn were outstanding- and judging by the smiles, they absolutely loved the experience!

A huge thank you to Ray for taking the time to visit St John’s and so generously share his knowledge, skills and experience with our students. Opportunities to learn directly from athletes of Ray’s calibre are incredibly valuable, and we feel very fortunate to have been able to offer this experience to our boys.

Ray, you’re welcome back at St John’s anytime!
