My ‘Bug Swat using Dolch 5 words’ for Year 3 is designed to provide students with opportunities to practice recognizing and reading Dolch 5 Sight Words. This activity is best used in a small group of no more than 5 students. Teacher scatters the bug words around the room, on the floor or table and calls out a word, students use their bug swatter (printed and laminated, or a plastic fly swat) to swat the said word. The first student to swat the correct word puts it in their rubbish bin/ trash can. At the end of the activity, students read out the words in their rubbish bin/ trash can. You could also ask students to use their words in a sentence (verbally).

These activities meet the Australian Curriculum English Statements (Language: Phonics and Word Knowledge) for Year 3:

•Understand how to use letter-sound relationships and less common letter patterns to spell words (ACELA-1485)

•Recognise and know how to write most high frequency words including some homophones (ACELA-1486)

This has been a crazy couple of years and Term 1 was very disrupted with lack of staffing (due to mandates), and then Covid running through remaining staff and students, preventing much progress in learning.

My ‘’Making and Using Easter 10 Frames‘ pack which is designed to help young students subitise numbers 1-10 in the 10 frame format.
This pack contains:
• Pack of ten 10 frame base cards 1-10 onto which students affix Easter-themed pictures with velcro to the numbered base card to show the designated number. Odd numbered base cards should be completed with the individual baskets of eggs and even numbered base cards should be completed with the individual chicks. These can be used with a mixture of the basket and chick individual icons to show addition and subtraction 1-10.
• Individual chick icons (even numbered 10 frames)
• 4 worksheets where students add together two groups in the one 10 frame. This helps students add subitised numbers 1-10 and also
become more familiar with ‘rainbow’ (making 10) facts.
