There has been plenty of excitement at Currumbin Village this week! The children have been fascinated watching the team from Red Beard Plumbing construct a new drainage system behind our centre. There were lots of questions and conversations about how water moves and where it goes when it rains. Not to be outdone, our own little plumbers and engineers created drainage systems of their own! These hands-on experiences are a wonderful way for children to develop creativity, teamwork, critical thinking, and an understanding of the world around them.

This week we were delighted to welcome back local author and wildlife conservationist Sarah Eccleston to share her newly published book, Tink, Tink, Tink! Through her beautiful story, Sarah introduced us to the incredible work at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and Wildlife Hospital, where dedicated experts like Sarah and Mikey research, care for, and release endangered animals back to their habitats. Sarah visited us last year when she shared her book, Have You Seen a Tree for Me? This visit is part of our ongoing partnership with CWS. Together we are empowering children to get messy, investigate, care for the environment and be the wildlife champions of the future. Thank you so much to Sarah and the team for their amazing work. If you'd like to support a wonderful local author, Tink, Tink, Tink! is available through Booktopia.

During Reconciliation Week, the children at Currumbin Village developed a deeper understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing, being and connecting to Country. Through meaningful discussions and inquiry, we explored the importance of caring for our environment and gained knowledge around our shared responsibility to protect the land around us.
Miss Tracey shared knowledge about ancient cave paintings and traditional storytelling through symbols and artwork. Using chalk to represent ochre, the children gathered rocks from our yard and sat together on the yarn mat, grinding the chalk and mixing it with water to create a paint-like paste. Using their hands and fingers, they then created their own artworks inspired by the stories, symbols and connections to Country they had been learning about.
This meaningful experience brought us together as a community, fostering respect, curiosity and a deeper appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, as well as the diverse experiences and perspectives of others.

Children at Currumbin Village, together with our special visitors, celebrated World Turtle Day. It has been a wonderful opportunity for our Green Earth Kids to learn how to protect Turtles, why they are important to our environment, and how small actions can help keep them safe. Questions asked by our GEKs: Why do Turtles have tails? How do they get over the rocks and into the ocean?
