Following the continued growth and success of Blues Boot Camps over the last 10 years, Wayne Jury is proud to present Blues Boot Camp 2020. It has been argued that the ‘blues form’ is the basis for all for styles of contemporary western music. Whether it is pop, rock, rap, hip-hop, jazz, soul or funk, their roots are traced back to West African Tribal music. The communal, “cal

l and response” influence of West African Tribal music is vast and significant and therefore worth understanding its application to contemporary music. Blues Boot Camp will avoid the blues musician stereotype (Black and poor) and show that blues music is an inclusive form and style of expression for all people, not a lifestyle. While having knowledge of the rules and theories of music is important, the ability to express yourself is equally so. Through the ‘Blues boot camp’ participants will gain a basic understanding of the mechanics of the blues and gospel forms of music as well as practical ways to apply this knowledge to modern forms of music. Blues boot camp encourages freedom of expression, combining knowledge with emotion creating a link to the students peers and the listening audience alike. The ability to express yourself in a positive and creative way in society seems to be becoming more difficult for young people today, many of who are engaging in drug and alcohol abuse and violence as an outlet for the frustrations and lack of expression in modern life. Ultimately we hope the ‘Blues boot camp’ will give students a window to view the possibilities that music can provide to them. Whether it is through interacting with others in a creative way or finding an outlet for their creativity regardless of whether it’s a career move or just for the sheer fun, joy and pleasure that music can bring.
